GOOD STILL SPEAKS…CHILDREN- 4

Marriage, for me meant children. I wanted babies…but my first baby to a while to come. Finally, he made his appearance in 1967. I had named him long before his birth and…on the day he arrived, after a very short labour for a first-time mum…nothing could have been greater than the joy I felt when I held my Andrew in my arms.

Another three sons arrived in quick succession, four boys in four years and nine months. From a woman with empty arms, longing for a family, I morphed into a frantically busy mother of four sons under the age of five. Those years slipped by in a flurry of cooking, cleaning, and caring for my husband and lively family.

I think that my husband took to doing his “ministry” away from home as much as possible during those years, to escape his fathering role. He opted out, first because he had no idea how to be a father…his own father had finally rejected him years before when he was in Bible College…and second, because raising his sons scared him and he distanced himself from them as much as he could. They were there, but he left them to me to handle.

The outcome was that I was building up a head of steam inside…a volcano of anger and frustration that threatened to blow from sheer overload!

One day, the volcano erupted! I was 35 weeks pregnant with my desperately-longed-for daughter. One of my sons defied me at the breakfast table. My pent-up anger exploded. I grabbed him by the hair and pulled him from the table.

I have no recollection of what I did next. I only remember falling in my knees at my bedside after the family had left and sobbing out my irrational rage to God.

Later that morning, I drove to an appointment with my gynae for my regular pre natal check up. She expressed concern that the foetal heart sounded distant and faint. I thought nothing of it but…on my drive home, I was aware of an unusual feeling, as though the baby had slumped down in my womb. As a midwife, I was acutely aware of and followed the progress of my baby by the movement inside.

There was no feeling of life that day…not the usual thump or flutter that I so enjoyed…those tiny interactions between my baby and me. Nothing! Just an eerie stillness and the alarm that grew as the hours passed.

Finally, when I could handle the apprehension no longer, I made a hurried visit to my local GP to check the foetal heart. Nothing! No a sound! No familiar beat of a healthy little heart! Only the rhythmic woosh-woosh of blood rushing through my uterine  vessels.

My GP immediately called my gymae and sent me off to the maternity hospital. After a few hours of induced labour, my daughter was born…beautiful, perfect, but wearing the mottled purple colour of death. I lifted my drugged head to take a quick glimpse of her before she was whipped away to be prepared for the mortuary.

My baby was born in the era when it was thought wise to protect mothers from the sight and experience of bearing a dead baby. No closure! No “goodbye”! No final feel of her tiny body close to mine! Only empty arms and a shattered heart!

After the birth, I was wheeled into a private ward close to the general ward where mothers had their babies in cribs alongside their beds…to bond and care for until their discharge. This practice changed the practice, during my training year, of keeping the babies in the nursery, only to be taken to mothers at feeding time.

My room was close enough to hear the babies crying…adding to the pain of my own loss…like digging a knife into an already deep, bleeding wound but…greater than the pain of loss was the agonising awareness of guilt. I had inadvertently killed my own baby by my angry outburst. I could not escape the truth. It overwhelmed me like a dark, threatening storm cloud.

As I lay there listening to baby wails, I felt the weight of my guilt. I offered no rational reasons…no excuses. Then, in the midst of my deep despair, I began to feel, creeping over my whole being a warmth, as if I were being wrapped in a soft, protective blanket…a Presence…forgiveness flooding my heart…peace driving out the guilt…quietness in my spirit that completely replaced the agony of my sin. I felt God’s love so real, so overwhelming, so liberating, that I was free, free inside from the crushing weight of what I had done. The memory still remained…but not the pain.

God had spoken…not in judgement…not even in words. He  was there. He had been there all the time but now…He had made Himself real, His own presence the greatest word of all…wordless but speaking of His deep love and forgiveness, of His unfailing mercy and grace.

I was discharged from the hospital that morning…carrying with me the memory, but not the pain, of my loss. So transformed was my experience…from deep grief to deep gratitude…that I was free to reassure, first my doctor and then my friends and family, that I was not suffering from delayed hysteria.

There is a past script, a closure to this story. A few weeks later, in the early spring, I was preparing for a move to another town. I took boxes of unwanted clutter to the dump which happened to be close to the cemetery. On an impulse, I walked through the area where babies and children were buried, hoping to find the spot where my little angel lay. My husband and I had been debating whether to put a memorial stone over her grave or not.

For some reason, despite my searching, I could not identify her resting place.  As I walked up the path, through the trees in fresh spring growth, I felt a whisper in my spirit. “She is not here!” Of course, her tiny body lay in the ground, a seed sown in death but she was with the Lord, waiting in hope for the moment of glorious resurrection.

I left that city and the child I had so deeply desired, in peace. I carried with me the assurance of a love so deep and so real that nothing in the future…and there were many deep and stormy waters to navigate on my way to the Father…that I forever treasure what I learned from the loss and the love that sustained and still sustains me every moment of every day.

WHY DO CHRISTIAN MARRIAGES FAIL?

Nowadays, Christian marriages, it seems, are just as vulnerable to failure as marriage contracts between people who have no allegiance to Jesus. Why is this so?

There are many factors that influence the way people view marriage today. Much of the time, marriage is an unpopular state because divorce is anticipated, inevitable breakup is costly, time consuming, and often messy, involving conflicts and heartache, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of children.

So, why get married? If we “shack up”, it’s much easier to go our separate ways if we don’t get on. It won’t involve the legal battles and the cost associated with divorce. And the kids? We’ll try to do our best for them….under the circumstances!

But what does does God say about marriage? After all, marriage is His idea. He set it up in the beginning and told us why we should enter into a permanent and legally binding contract with one person for life.

God’s blueprint for marriage is simple and clear.

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭2:23‭-‬24‬ ‭NLT‬
[23] “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” [24] This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”

So much symbolism is in this statement!

Hebrew “etsem” means bone, substance, or the same.

The woman, taken from the man, was of the the same substance as the man.

Hebrew “basar” means, flesh, body, person,

The woman has the same body as a man. She is also equally a person.

Hebrew “ishsha” means woman or wife. Hebrew “ish” means man or husband, from the same root.

The wife is of the same essence or substance as her husband.

Hebrew “azab” means leave, forsake, loose.

The man shall loose himself from parental bonds and create a new bond with his wife.

Hebrew “dabak” means cling to, cleave, keep close.

The man shall cling to his wife and hold her close.

Hebrew “echad” meaning one (the same word used to describe the unity between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

Their purpose is to work at creating a unity that resembles the unity in the Godhead.

These Hebrew words describe the pattern God set for marriage from the beginning. The sexual union is God’s way of expressing and cementing the union that most clearly reflects the nature of God. The seeds sown in a sexual union produce the fruit that must pass on the purpose and pattern of marriage to the next generation.

Above all other reasons for marriage is God’s desire that the bond forged between a man and a woman should resemble and reflect the bond (unity – echad) between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the godhead. You see, God is a family, an interactive, integrated, harmonious unit of three persons who always love, respect and submit to one another. God’s design for human families is to be on earth what the three-in-one God is in heaven.

Part of Jesus’ mission to earth was to show human beings how to live in union with the Father. The writer to the Hebrews said of Him,

‭Hebrews‬ ‭5:7, 8 NIV‬
[7] “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
[8]”Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered…”

Jesus Himself testified to His love, trust, submission, and obedience to the Father throughout His earthly life. He also spoke of His intimate connection with the Holy Spirit.

The big issue is, once again for humans, the sin nature with which both husband and wife are born. As new creatures in Christ, it is the obligation of believing husband and wife to put the old nature to death through the power of the Holy Spirit in them. Every failed Christian marriage is a failure to allow the Holy Spirit to direct their lives.

Paul said bluntly,

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:12‭-‬13‬ ‭NIV‬
[12] Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. [13] For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”

Paul also gave us a simple pattern for every marriage that will grow in unity if both husband and wife understand and fulfil their role in dependence in the Holy Spirit.

‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:22‭-‬27, 31-‬32 ‭NIV‬
[22] Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
[23] For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, and his body, of which he is the Savior. [24] Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. [25] Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her [26] to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, [27] and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless…..
[31] “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” [32] This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.”

So, dear readers, marriage is not about legalised sex, making each other happy, meeting one another’s needs, creating a family, a covenant of companionship, or any other human reason.

Marriage is about becoming one as a picture on earth of God’s family in heaven. This goal requiress the death of self with all its ugly departments and demands, seeking instead the same goal together in humility and mutual submission, with forgiveness and understanding the foundation of harmony. This harmony can only work if both are committed to same goal.

Any other goal is bound to fail because God only supports and empowers those who choose to do His will.

Imagine what the home and the church would be like if every Christian couple would seriously and purposefully work towards unity. By putting to death their selfishness, and by living under the leadership and control of the Holy Spirit, they would show the world who God really is!

ALL ECSTACIES AND INTIMACIES

ALL ECSTACIES AND INTIMACIES

“Jesus said, ‘Marriage is a major preoccupation here, but not there. Those who are included in the resurrection of the dead will no longer be concerned with marriage nor, of course, with death. They will have better things to think about, if you can believe it. All ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God.'” Luke 20:34-36 (The Message).

Wrong perspective again! Would they never learn?

The Sadducees’ preoccupation was political rather than religious and they had no axe to grind with Jesus. However, they were prompted to get in on the act with their religious counterparts, the Pharisees, not realising that no-one could outsmart Jesus, least of all them with their superficial knowledge of the Scriptures.

So they came at Him with a question prompted by their ignorance, and received a profound response that gives us a chink of light into the life of the believer in the hereafter. It amazes me how much of Jesus’ teaching on the deepest truths about God and the relationship He has called us into, came out of conflict with His opponents.

The current concept and experience of marriage, both in the world and in the church, is a mess because we have failed to grasp God’s original intention, hence the soaring divorce rate, dysfunctional families and all the unhappiness that causes, and all the other deviations from this holy institution; sexual promiscuity, ‘shacking up’ and so-called ‘sexual orientation’. Although our way does not work, we have not yet learned that God’s way is the truth.

What is God’s way?

On one occasion the Pharisees were questioning Jesus about the legality of divorce. He swept aside their rationalising in one single statement, “‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard, But it was not this way from the beginning.'” Matthew 19:8 (NIV).

God expressly stated that His intention was to create man in His own image. Israel’s statement of faith in Deuteronomy 6:4 gives us the essence of what that means: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” God’s oneness implies unity in diversity, unity of essence and nature but diversity in function.

The entire universe reflects God’s image in its interdependence and interaction. Nothing in the universe functions independently. The universe is one, unity in diversity. The pinnacle of the expression of that oneness is in man. God made man to be like Him in the unity of our being – body, soul and spirit functioning as one, and in our capacity to be spiritually one with Him.

After creating man and woman, His first action was to bring them together for one purpose: “The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’, for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Genesis 2:23-24 (NIV).

Jesus made it clear that marriage was only for this life because, when a husband and wife learn to live together in unity, they will have a foretaste of the ecstacies and intimacies of unity with God in the life to come. Marriage is a picture of the real thing and will fall away when the real thing happens.

Selfishness and the power struggle that often happens between husband and wife ruins that picture. It can only become reality if they both understand what marriage is about and learn to live with each other in mutual submission (Ephesians 5:21), and self-sacrificing love. Jesus is our perfect role model. He gave His life for His bride, the church. The purpose of marriage is to be a mirror to the world of what Jesus did for His bride, so that the world may see what God is like and return to Him.

Sex And Money!

SEX AND MONEY!

Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed be kept pure, for God will judge the adulterers and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’ (Heb. 13: 4-6).

Sex and money! Doesn’t the ungodly world revolve around sex and money? God has set the boundaries around which these two things are to be used for our blessing and benefit, and for His glory. When we stay within the boundaries, we enjoy God’s favour and blessing and both work for us as they should.

The problem is that human beings have said, “We don’t like your boundaries, God. They are too restrictive, so we’ll make our own rules.” However, our rules are – no rules. As far as sex and money are concerned, anything goes. The Hebrew concept of hell is a place with no boundaries. By casting off God’s restraints and refusing to believe that there are consequences until it’s too late, the human race has created its own hell on earth.

As bad as that is, what is worse is that the church, to a large extent, has followed suit. Church leaders, and prominent ones at that, rationalise sin away as though God’s standards are equal to “situation ethics” – whatever feels right to you is right. What passes for “love” is the excuse for every kind of sexual promiscuity and perversity. Homosexuality, for example, is condoned and excused because people of the same sex “love each other.” “Falling out of love” is a perfectly good reason for adultery and divorce, and pastors very often lead the way. As for fornication among the youth, well . . .

What passes for “God’s blessing” is a cover up for greed and even extortion within the church. How did we get to the place where we buy God’s miracles by being given the guarantee that, if we “sow into” so-and-so’s ministry, God will do what we want? The tragedy is that gullible, uninformed so-called “believers” swallow the bait and line the pockets of unscrupulous big-name preachers so that they can enjoy the hard-earned money of those they deceive. Guilt is the whip these “spiritual” leaders use to drive the people “in the name of the Lord.”

And what of what I call “charismatic shopping”! “For a gift of x amount or more (note the “or more” bit!), you can have this book, or CD, or DVD” or whatever is on offer. Have you ever! Imagine going into a shop and seeing the price of an article stated this way: “For a gift of . . . you can have this . . .” Isn’t is the same thing?

Satan, under the guise of promiscuous or perverted sex and greed, has staked his claim to be Lord, and laughs at those who follow him. He knows very well where he is leading them. He gets them exactly where he wants them, enslaved to sin and in line for God’s judgment. He knows he is heading for the lake of fire and he is determined to take as many with him as he can. He dangles the carrot of pleasure and gratification in front of the unsuspecting until they are hooked and then he laughs in their faces.

What should our attitude be to these two most powerful forces in the world – sex and money? God has set His boundaries – and our response should be to obey. The surprising thing is that, when we do, we enjoy more pleasure and gratification than all the pleasure people seek who do it by bending the rules. God is smart. He knows why we were made, how we were made and what works for us. He ought to, since He is our Creator, with apologies to the “big bang” people.

His rules are simple. Rule number one: You can have all the sex you want, within the boundaries of monogamous marriage and a faithful and loyal relationship. Rule number two: You can have all the money you want as long as you work for it and use it to serve you, your family and those who are in need. Money is a good servant but a bad master.

Within these boundaries you will live in and promote peace in your family and wherever you can be of help to others. Unity in marriage is a reflection of the oneness within the godhead.  Generosity with your money and possessions is a reflection of the generosity of our God who gave His only Son to save us from perishing in our sin. Our best and only response to love like that is to do what He tells us because He knows that it works.

A wise person, according to the Scriptures, is one who does what works. A fool is one who knows that what he does, does not work but he does it anyway. He does the same thing over and over again but expects a different outcome. How dumb is that! For us as human beings made in the image of God, there is only one thing that works – obedience to God’s instructions.

So why buck the system? You will not hurt God but you will certainly hurt yourself.
