GOD STILL SPEAKS…ETERNAL LIFE – 13

I have traveled a long road…seventy years with Jesus. What can I say? 

In Jesus’ high priestly prayer on the eve of His death, He defined for us, for me, the true meaning of eternal life…

“And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.”

‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

…not one day when I die but a powerful reality here and now…in this fallen, broken world…under divine authority and divine supervision. 

Did Peter remember Jesus’ prayer when he concluded his second letter with these words…

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.”

If knowing God…Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…is the essence of eternal life, then, all of life’s experiences…including failure, brokenness, and loss…are the arena in which He reveals Himself as gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, and full of covenant love. 

Looking back over seventy years of life…raw, rough, and full of every kind of failure…I can say with utmost confidence that I know Him. I have seen and experienced a tiny fragment of the God who rescued me from self-destruction, loved me in my worst and darkest moments…when I was utterly unlovable…and has been faithful to His Word and to me beyond my wildest imagination.

The God whom I heard about in Sunday School, and read about in His Word, is the God who met me in a marquee tent on 1st April, 1956…raised me from spiritual death to spiritual life, and set my feet on the Way…in Christ…to know Him. 

Do I know Him? Yes and no! I know fragments about Him because He has spoken to me…in my spirit across the span of seventy years…in my ignorance…in my disobedience…and in my feeble efforts to follow Him. 

I knew Him whenever I took a wrong turn and headed in the wrong direction, He gently steered me back to the path. 

I knew Him when He blessed me way more than I could ever deserve. 

I knew Him when He gave me rest from my futile self-effort and reassured me that it was okay just to be me. 

I knew Him when I fell…hard…when He forgave my sin, time and again, picked me up, washed me clean, held me close…and walked on with me…at His side. 

I knew Him through the years of peaceful work in the company of His people…safe and tranquil…as well as the years of labour and learning in the rough and tumble of an evil world.

I know Him now as the God who loves the elderly, who causes me to flourish in the environment He  has chosen for me.  

I know Him when hears my prayers for my wayward family and my suffering nation and the nations of the world, patiently unfolding His plan in mysterious ways that reveal His wisdom and power. 

I know Him when He reassures me that He rules on the earth and that His kingdom is here now, and coming in its fullness when Jesus returns. 

I know Him when I dwell on His goodness, mercy, and favour that have followed me all the days of my life. 

I know Him when I anticipate with great joy the prospect of being with Him forever…my eyes on the glories of the yet unseen that await me and all those who long for His return. 

Do I know Him? Yes, I do…because He has revealed Himself to me in my short life.  Do I know Him? No, because He is more than time and eternity can ever reveal. 

And so…the prospect of knowing Him stretches before me into the eternity that awaits me and all who love and follow Jesus. 

My eighty-sixth birthday is just around the corner. Will I reach it? I have no idea. One thing I know…God will finish what He started!

“…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you (me) will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

THE GOAL OF IT ALL

Peter 1:3-4 NLT‬
[3] “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. [4] And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.”

God’s declared purpose is to have a human family like His Son who will share in all the blessings and benefits of His kingdom and even reign with Jesus throughout eternity.

God gave us a planet perfectly suited for human life on which to serve our apprenticeship for our eternal lives with Him. He gave us His instructions for life in community with one another on this planet under His authority.

Instead of carrying out God’s instructions, our forefather, Adam, chose to go it alone. He made the rules to suit his own desires, and led the human race on a path to self-destruction.

Nevertheless, the Father went to great lengths to achieve His goal, sacrificing His own Son to get His plan back on track.

‭Hebrews 2:10 NIV‬
[10] “In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.”

God has no plan B.

[5] “In view of all this, make every to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, [6] and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, [7] and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. [8] The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

God’s plan for His people is not to have a comfortable life on earth. “Down here“ is our apprenticeship for “up there”. Part of our apprenticeship, then, involves discipline and suffering which teach us submission and obedience to the Father, the hallmarks of true sons.

The Father has certain requirements for the life to come. Faith in His Son, empowered by His Spirit, gives us entrance to and life in His eternal kingdom now.

‭John 3:16 NLT‬
[16] “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

‭1 John 5:11-12 NLT‬
[11]”And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.”

Holiness is His requirement for seeing Him.

‭Hebrews 12:14 NLT‬
[14]”Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.”

Good works, the fruit of our fellowship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit in us, confirm that we belong to Him.

‭James 2:19-20, 24 NLT‬
[19]” You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. [20] How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?…
[24] So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.”

This life, then, is a partnership with the Holy Spirit, all the way.

‭Romans 8:11, 14 NLT‬
[11]”The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you….
[14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”

God works in us but, without our co-operation and obedience, He can do nothing to change us into the image of Jesus.

‭Philippians 2:12-13 NLT‬
[12]”…Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. [13] For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

[10] “So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. [11] Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Since our faith in God is of supreme importance because…

‭Hebrews 11:6 NLT‬
[6]”… It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

God constantly tests our trust in Him through the trials and hardships we suffer. When testing comes and we keep questioning His love, He will continue to allow trials and hardships to teach us His faithfulness and goodness through everything we suffer.

The real issue is, how far will God go to ensure that we fulfill His plan? The answer is, all the way, no matter what it takes. This means that He will continue to chip off everything in us that does not resemble His Son until He brings us to perfection when we see Jesus.

‭1 John 3:1-2 NLT‬
[1] “See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!… [2] Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.”

‭1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT‬
[6]”So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. [7] These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.”

As a loving Father, He disciplines us to teach us to live in complete dependence on Jesus because…

‭John 15:5 NLT‬
[5] “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”

Unfortunately, much preaching in churches today focuses on our comfort and convenience in this world rather than our training and preparation for the world to come. Unscrupulous false teachers lure God’s people away from the truth by promises of health, wealth, and happiness. They couch their lies in the words of Scripture cleverly manipulated to sound like the truth.

Peter warned against those who twist the truth to their own destruction.

‭2 Peter 3:15-16 NLT‬
[15] “And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— [16] speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.”

How much better, then, to recognise the goal of God’s work in us, work with Him by trusting Him no matter what, and keep our eyes on the prize… likeness to Jesus, God’s perfect Son.

‭2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NLT‬
[16]“That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. [17] For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! [18] So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”

THE MEASURE OF TRUTH

We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands. Whoever says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not keep His commands is a liar and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in him. This is how we know that we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did. (1 John 2: 3-6)

What a difference between the standards of God’s Word and the standards that are applied in many parts of the church today! In some denominations, doctrine has become the standard of acceptance. If its members adhere to the right doctrines – or at least to the doctrines they believe in – everything else is acceptable.

One denomination I know of makes infant baptism the test. If any of its members dares to be baptised by immersion as a believer in obedience to Jesus’ command, he or she is immediately excommunicated because he has “undone his salvation”. Others make premillennialism the criterion. Its members must believe in a secret rapture, an evil antichrist political world ruler and seven years of tribulation before Jesus returns.

Sometimes the standards of the church are whittled down to what is socially or politically acceptable, regardless of what the Word of God says about it. The gay agenda is a case in point. God’s clear condemnation of homosexuality is smoothed over by fine-sounding arguments and rationalisation until it sounds as though we know the truth and God is at fault.

Now I ask, “Where did they find those requirements among the commands of Jesus?”

Peter had blown it badly. He was in the depths of despair because his beloved Master, whom he professed to love, was dead, and he had no opportunity to seek His forgiveness for his terrible words on the eve of His death. Jesus had warned him about a coming test, but Peter had brushed it aside with a cock-sure denial of his weakness. “Even though everyone else forsakes you, I will never do it!”

Then it happened. Peter was caught off guard by a servant girl in the courtyard of the high priest’s house. He lied, and he could not take it back. Instead of owning up, he lied again, twice more and then the cock crowed. It was Jesus’ look that undid him. He remembered Jesus’ warning – too late, and that look of compassion cracked him up. He wept as he had never wept before – big, tough, blustering, motor-mouth Peter!

No, it was not that he did not believe in the right doctrines, or that he failed to carry out the right rituals. He lied about his association with Jesus.

However, there was a sequel to Peter’s failure. Jesus was back among them, alive, as He said He would do. He found His disciples in Galilee, back fishing. He prepared a delicious fish barbeque for them and invited them to join Him. After breakfast, when their hunger was satisfied, He turned to Peter with an unexpected question. “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”

Not, “Why did you do it?” or “Do you promise never to do that again?” but a simple, “Do you love me?” Jesus said nothing about Peter’s failure. Not a word of accusation. Not a whisper of reproach. Just “Do you love me?” Three times, “Do you love me?” Peter must have had to think very deeply about his response. Did he really love Jesus? Why did He ask him that question? Any other question would have been easier to answer.

But, you see, that’s the difference between belonging to a club or organization and belonging to Jesus. We don’t keep the rules because we love the club. We keep the rules so that we are not thrown out, but belonging to Jesus is based on a different criterion.

If you love me, show it by doing what I have told you. (John 14:15 – The Message)

We have already talked about the essence of God’s nature. God is love. Love is the energy that drives Him. Everything about Him is motivated by love. It stands to reason, then, that love is the glue that binds Him to us and, therefore, should bind us to Him.

Our love for Jesus is the power behind everything we do or should be. If we find it difficult to obey Him, we need to ask the question of ourselves that Jesus asked Peter: “Do I really love Him?” Love is the only force that will keep us in union with Him. When we are driven to obey by the fear of punishment, we are still slaves at heart. When we are motivated by love for Jesus, we are the true children of God. 

Not our belief systems or adherence to our church’s requirements, but our love for Jesus, demonstrated by our obedience to what He told us in His word, is the acid test. Our love for Him is expressed by the way we hate what He hates and care about what He cares about. It’s not about keeping rules or else . . . It’s about loving Jesus enough to uphold everything that is important to Him.

Do you really love Him?

STABLE IN A SINFUL WORLD

I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of His name. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2: 12-14)

I’m not quite sure what John’s reason was for singling groups of people out and for repeating what he had to say to them. Perhaps they needed encouragement because of the particular issues they faced at their time of life. We need to examine the circumstances of his readers since their lives were always in great peril as believers in Jesus who had to swim against the current of Jewish fanaticism and Roman antagonism because they refused to bow to Caesar as Lord.

In the overwhelming tide of idolatry in the Roman Empire of that day, there were pockets of people all over the empire who had renounced the worship of idols for the truth that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and that He died for their sins. The worship of idol gods entailed the offering of sacrifices, temple prostitution and sexual promiscuity, all in the name of “worship”. The lives of their devotees were riddled with sinful practices while the children of God were called to live holy lives, separated from unclean things in the midst of the evil all around them.

John, then, reminded the “children”, most likely not literal children, but those who, through faith in Jesus, had been adopted into God’s family and were therefore no longer a part of sinful society and the world system, that their sins had been forgiven. For the believer, sin wasn’t just violating the customs and practices of society around them or the gods they worshipped. Sin was anything that fell short of God’s perfection and holiness. It was not their worship or their sacrifices that brought them forgiveness of sin, but the death of God’s Son who gave His life for them.

It was important that they keep this fact in mind in the face of the false beliefs of their neighbours and the hostility they faced for daring to put their faith in a Jewish rabbi who was crucified as a criminal and whom, they claimed, rose from the dead and was alive in them. In the face of the filth of the world around them, their sins had been forgiven.

Who were the “fathers” John addressed? Were they the literal fathers? Were they the “fathers” of the flock of God’s people? It doesn’t matter. John knew that they also needed encouragement. Their sins were forgiven – they knew that – but, more than that, they knew the Father. What does it mean to “know” God? Not intellectual knowledge or even casual acquaintance. This was about knowing the Father intimately like sons who spend time with, have fellowship with and live in submission and obedience to their fathers because they love them.

They were fathers because they were mature believers who were not troubled or thrown by the ungodly society around them. They had long since been weaned from the world and its allurements. Their faces were towards God. They enjoyed fellowship with Him, which meant more to them than fellowship with the world. Idols no longer held them in fear. They had tasted the goodness of God and the joy of living under His authority in His kingdom. They were comfortable and secure in the love of God and content to keep trusting Him in the face of severe trials and the constant threat of death.

And what of the young men John addressed? These were the ones who were of the age to serve in the military. Perhaps John saw them as the “soldiers” in the army of God who had learned to overcome the enemy and were called to stand guard over the people of God. Perhaps they had done time in the Roman army, protecting the borders of the empire and preserving peace and stability in its colonies. From their military experience they knew what it meant to keep the enemy at bay.

However, they also knew that soldiers in the army of God were not to fight – Jesus had already overcome the enemy. It was their task to stand – to identify the enemy’s subtle tactics and unmask him by exposing his lies. Their weapons were not of the world but spiritual, faith as a shield and the sword of the Spirit – truth which would reveal his lies and leave him naked and defenceless.

They knew that the battle was not in their circumstances but in their minds. The devil tried to lure them back under his authority by sowing lies into their minds, but they would use the truth of God’s word to expose his lies and neutralise his power over them.

Unlike the idols of their day who were no more than an expression and extension of the worst of human nature, John’s readers knew that the forgiveness of their sins was real, that they had come to know the Father intimately and that they had the weapons and the knowledge and experience to overcome the enemy within.
