JACOB, DECEIVER TURNED DEPENDENT – 5

The situation weighed heavy on Jacob’s mind as he continued his journey towards Canaan. It was slow going with such a huge company of people and animals… plenty of time to think about what might lie ahead for them.

As his misgivings grew, so he schemed to protect his family and possessions from Esau’s revenge. Despite his human efforts and the reassurance of God’s presence and protection, Jacob needed something more than his own ingenuity.

He had come to the end of himself. God had given him many years of hardship and turmoil to bring him to the realisation that, without God, he had created the mess he was in. He left an enemy behind in Haran, his uncle and father-in-law, Laban. Ahead lay another enemy, Esau his brother, estranged by his own trickery. He was caught in the middle with many people to protect and no way of escape.

So, in desperation, Jacob turned to God.

‭Genesis‬ ‭32:9‭-‬12‬ ‭NIV‬
[9] “Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’ [10] I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. [11] Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. [12] But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’ ”

One lesson Jacob was learning from his grandfather, Abraham, was to lean on God’s promises. He gave God the credit for enriching him with family and flocks but he needed God’s intervention to save them all from Esau’s vengeance.

Hoping to appease his brother, he sent his servants with a large gift of flocks, herds, and servants, but the servants returned with bad news. Esau was on his way to meet him with a large contingent of men.

‭Genesis‬ ‭32:4‭-‬6‬ ‭NIV‬
[4] He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now. [5] I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’ ” [6] When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

Jacob was desperate. He had done his best to defuse Esau’s anger but he had no idea what would happen next. Would Esau resort to bloodshed to avenge his lost birthright and blessing?

Once more, God met Jacob at the time of his deepest need.

‭Genesis‬ ‭32:22‭-‬30‬ ‭NIV‬
[22] That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. [23] After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. [24] So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. [25] When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. [26] Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” [27] The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. [28] Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” [29] Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. [30] So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

How often God comes to us when we are most vulnerable, when our guilt weighs us down or when our weakness bares our throat to the enemy. Jacob had painted himself into a corner, like the children of Israel on the shore of the Red Sea, the Egyptians behind them and the sea in front of them. No escape route for human ingenuity to grasp!

God loves a situation like this because it’s the time when His child stops running and listens to Him instead. I think Jacob was sick of himself and his devious ways. Look where it had got him. He was stuck, with no way out.

So, God had him by the throat, pinned him down, and finally got his attention. Instead of eliminating him for his wickedness, God held him fast until he stopped fighting. Then, as it dawned on Jacob that it was God Himself, in human form, who was his opponent, he held on to Him, refusing to release his grip until he was assured, not only of mercy but also of God’s favour. What a moment! What a place to be in!

Why did the exchange between God and Jacob focus on their names? According to Hebrew understanding, a name is a prophetic utterance of character. Jacob was well-named, meaning “supplanter”, implying a deceiver, or “heel” since Jacob grabbed Esau’s heel as he was being born.

At that moment Jacob, on confession of his name, was changed to “Israel” , a new name, a new disposition, a new nature, a new person, a prince with God. In a sense, he had held on to God until he had won the battle.

Jacob, the deceiver, was transformed. At that moment, he became Israel, God’s Prince. From then on, the nation being formed would take on his new name, the children of Israel. Strange, isn’t it, that the nation would be named after Israel, not Ahraham, its founder. Why?

Jacob was a fighter. He never gave up until he got what he wanted. Even if it took devious means, he fought until he won. So, in his wrestling with God he refused to let go until he got God’s blessing. His dogged determination got him the prize.

Like Jacob, the Apostle Paul manifested the same quality of perseverance.

‭Philippians‬ ‭3:10‭-‬14‬ ‭NIV‬
[10] “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, [11] and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. [12] Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. [13] Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, [14] I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

God loves and approves of those who hang on to their goal to the end, no matter what, to gain the ultimate prize of eternal likeness to Jesus.

It was that quality that God wanted to build into the nation of Israel, to gain and retain the promise that He gave them through the patriarchs, Abraham, the initiator, Isaac, the bridge, and Jacob, the fighter for what was his.

Why did God honour this quality in Jacob? Even the devious ways in which Jacob got what he wanted did not disqualify him from God’s purpose. God honours a “finisher”. Jesus endorsed this determined perseverance in His people.

‭Matthew‬ ‭24:12‭-‬13‬ ‭NIV‬
[12] “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, [13] but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

Trial and trouble separate true believers from opportunists. Those who stick with Jesus, no matter what, will gain the prize.

‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:7‭-‬8‬ ‭NIV‬
[7]”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. [8] Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

What a testimony!

THE CYCLE OF GOD’S GRACE

All sin is the fruit of unbelief. However, for God to judge sin and punish sinners, unbelief must be confirmed by sinful behaviour. So, I ask the question, “Why is sinful behaviour increasing on the earth, as Paul predicted? Is God preparing the ungodly for the day of judgment when the full extent of sin in the hearts of sinners will exposed, and God’s justice will be vindicated?”

Where does God’s mercy fit into His dealings with humans?

Throughout the Bible, it is clear that God chose Israel to be His special people. Above all other nations, Israel belonged to God and is still His treasured possession. He set up a legally binding covenant with them in which He gave detailed instructions for them to obey as their part of the agreement.

Israel was not left in doubt about the way God would treat them if they failed to observe the terms of His covenant. Yet, despite the ministry of His prophets throughout their history, Israel persistently rebelled against the Lord, defied His instructions, and paid the price for their disobedience.

God chose to prepare Israel to bring His Messiah to earth through them. He gave them the Promised Land as their eternal possession, from where Jesus will rule when He returns to redeem the earth and to set up His kingdom.

No other nation on earth has ever received God’s promises of restoration as Israel has received despite their unfaithfulness. Every prophecy of judgment against God’s people is concluded with a promise of return to their own land and renewal of their relationship with God and the destruction of their enemies.

Why is God so adamant about restoring His people despite their rejection of His covenant? Many thousands of Jews have perished at the hands of their enemies but God has always preserved a remnant for Himself.

The answer… His covenant with Abraham which overrides all other covenants and was fulfilled by the coming of Jesus. Not only did God set up a covenant with Abraham’s physical descendants but also with Abraham’s descendants through faith in Jesus.

‭Galatians‬ ‭3:26‬ ‭NLT‬
[26] “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus…
[29] And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and the promise to Abraham belongs to you.”

Even the covenant God made with Israel at Mount Sinai has an expiry date.

‭Hebrews‬ ‭8:7‭-‬8‬ ‭NLT‬
[7]” If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it. [8] But when God found fault with the people, he said: “The day is coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah….
[13] When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.”

So, for all who have faith in Jesus, there is a cycle of grace into which we have entered, which guarantees our eternal salvation if we remain faithful to the one who bought us with His own blood. Yes, God rescued His covenant people from extermination and extinction over and over again as His enemies were determined to wipe Israel from the earth – the Egyptians, the Amalekites, the Philistines, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, Haman the Agagite, Hitler, and even Hamas in the current war against Israel… but God! His promise still stands.

How much more, then, will He keep His promise to those who have been saved by His grace through Jesus. The world hates God’s people, Jews and Christians of every tribe and language. The world would love to wipe us out.
But God…

He has promised an eternal home with Him to all who have entered His rest in by faith in Jesus. His favour is a shield of protection around us. Whatever the circumstances of our lives, good or bad, He is working for our good to recreate us to be like Jesus.

So, take heart, dear family of God. You are safe in the circle of God’s favour, now and forever, as you hold fast, faithful and steadfast, to your Lord, and remain in union with Him. Israel’s story will always remind us that God is who He says He is, and always does what He says He will do. Judgment or salvation? God is faithful.

WHAT ABOUT ISRAEL?

Psalms‬ ‭135:4‬ ‭NLT‬
[4] For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own special treasure.
[6] The Lord does whatever pleases him throughout all heaven and earth, and on the seas and in their depths.

‭Proverbs‬ ‭30:5‬ ‭NLT‬
[5] Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.

Micah 7:11-12,15-27 NLT
[11] “In that day, Israel, your cities will be rebuilt, and your borders will be extended. [12] People from many lands will come and honor you— from Assyria all the way to the towns of Egypt, from Egypt all the way to the Euphrates River, and from distant seas and mountains….
[15] “Yes,” says the Lord, “I will do mighty miracles for you, like those I did when I rescued you from slavery in Egypt.” [16] All the nations of the world will stand amazed at what the Lord will do for you. They will be embarrassed at their feeble power. They will cover their mouths in silent awe, deaf to everything around them. [17] Like snakes crawling from their holes, they will come out to meet the Lord our God. They will fear him greatly, trembling in terror at his presence.”

The world waits with bated breath to see what will come of this conflict between Hamas and Israel. It seems that Hamas has the support of millions around the world. Despite Hamas’ atrocities and their despicable policy of using civilians to shield their terrorist fighters and their arsenal of weapons, the world believes that their demands and their purpose are legitimate.

When we read the Bible, we see a very different side to Israel’s defence of its territory. A constant theme runs through the prophecies of the Old Testament. Despite Israel’s failure to abide by God’s covenant and their stubborn practice of worshipping idols, and God’s punishment by war, famine, and exile, God promised to preserve a remnant and to return and resettle them in their own land. The nation and the land are inseparably joined together as God promised Abraham.

‭Isaiah‬ ‭61:4‬ ‭NLT‬
[4] “They will rebuild the ancient ruins, repairing cities destroyed long ago. They will revive them, though they have been deserted for many generations.
[8] “For I, the Lord, love justice. I hate robbery and wrongdoing. I will faithfully reward my people for their suffering and make an everlasting covenant with them. [9] Their descendants will be recognized and honored among the nations. Everyone will realize that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”

The Apostle Paul negates the theory that God is finished with natural Israel. “Replacement theology” teaches that the church has replaced Israel as the new Israel but…

Paul makes clear that salvation comes to the Jew in the same way as to the Gentile, through faith in Jesus. However, there is a season of grace for Gentiles since Israel’s unbelief has opened the door of salvation to the whole world but…

That door will close when the number of the Gentiles is complete. Then Israel’s opportunity will to be saved will come.

‭Romans‬ ‭11:1‭-‬2‬ ‭NIV‬
[1] “I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. [2] God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel:
[11] Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious….
[25] I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, [26] and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. [27] And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.” [28] As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, [29] for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. [30] Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, [31] so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. [32] For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.”

‭Micah‬ ‭7:18-‬20‬ ‭NIV‬
[18] Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. [19] You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. [20] You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.”

Yes, salvation will come to the Jews only through faith in Jesus but, in God’s mercy, He will lift the veil of unbelief and reveal to the Jews that Jesus is their Messiah, as Zechariah prophesied..

Zechariah‬ ‭12:2‭-‬6‬ ‭NIV‬
[2] “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. [3] On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. [4] On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness,” declares the Lord. “I will keep a watchful eye over Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations. [5] Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the Lord Almighty is their God.’ [6] “On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume all the surrounding peoples right and left, but Jerusalem will remain intact in her place….
[9] On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. [10] “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son…..

‭Zechariah‬ ‭13:1‬ ‭NIV‬
[1] “On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.
[9]…. I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’ ”

‭Ezekiel‬ ‭38:14‭-‬18‬ ‭NIV‬
[14] “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety, will you not take notice of it? [15] You will come from your place in the far north, you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army. [16] You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud that covers the land. In days to come, Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I am proved holy through you before their eyes. [17] “ ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You are the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel. At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. [18] This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign Lord….
[21] I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign Lord. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. [22] I will execute judgment on him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him. [23] And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’

And so, dear brothers and sisters, let’s not toss Israel aside as some do. Let’s pray fervently that God’s will for His covenant people will be fully accomplished through their salvation, that God’s true Israel may be complete. Then the world will know that the God of Israel is the only true God.

IS GOD FINISHED WITH ISRAEL?

IS GOD FINISHED WITH ISRAEL?

“I ask then: Did God reject His people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. God did not reject His people whom He foreknew. Don’t you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah – how he appealed to God against Israel. ‘Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me’? And what was God’s answer to him? ‘I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ So, too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.” Romans 11:1-6.

There is a stream of teaching in the church today that says that God has washed His hands of the Jews. If Paul were here, he would vehemently defend the argument of Scripture that God still has a plan for them in spite of their mass rejection of Jesus as their Messiah. ‘If not,’ says Paul, ‘then why is it that I, who am an Israelite and a descendant of Abraham, am also one of his spiritual sons, by faith in Jesus?’

The Bible teaches that there are two “Israels” – natural Israel, those who are the physical descendants of Abraham, and spiritual Israel, those who follow Abraham’s example of faith in Jesus as the Messiah.

Not all natural Israel are God’s children because they have rejected Jesus, set up their own standard of righteousness and fallen short of God’s requirement, perfection. On the other hand, Gentiles who have no claim to Abrahamic descent, have been welcomed into the family of God because they did what Abraham did; they believed God’s promise and received His righteousness as a free gift. And this when they were not even actively seeking Him!

It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 8 In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. Romans 9:6-8

What Paul is clearly teaching is that God has established a new covenant with Israel, not based on the law but based on the one who perfectly fulfilled the law. Only those who receive and participate in this new covenant are the true people of God. Jews and Gentiles are included in the New Covenant, sealed in the blood of Jesus.

This covenant was not an afterthought. It is the central message of the Bible and the fulfilment of God’s covenant with Abraham. The Mosaic covenant was an interim agreement by which God set up His holy standards to show His people what was needed to be accepted and which was intended to show them just how far short they fell and how impossible it was to achieve the righteousness acceptable to God by their own efforts.

No, God did not reject the Jews, but He did show them that they are no different from the Gentiles. They have to come to God in exactly the same way as any non-Jew – through the one whom God appointed to be the mediator – His Son, whom He sent to be the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the whole world.

However, at the same time, does that mean that He has no further use for the Jews as a nation? Does He treat them as He does any other nation on earth? He chose Abraham and promised that He would make of him a great nation and through him all the nations on earth would be blessed. Did God cancel His promise to Abraham? Did He go back on what He had said simply because Israel failed to keep their side of the agreement? Does that make God’s sovereign plans subject to human failure?

Some argue that God is finished with the Jews; that He wiped His hands of them when they crucified their Messiah. That’s the reason the Romans came in and destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD and scattered the Jews. That’s why Hitler exterminated millions during WW2. That’s why the world is against Israel today and the Arab nations are bent on wiping the Jews from the face of the earth – so they say.

But is that what God’s Word says? We shall have to read on to find out what God has to say about Israel…

THE BOOK OF ACTS – TIMING IS THE FATHER’S BUSINESS

TIMING IS THE FATHER’S BUSINESS

“When they were together for the last time, they asked, ‘Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?’

“He told them, ‘You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit.  And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria and even to the ends of the world.'” Acts 1:6-8 (The Message).

The disciples were like bulldogs with a bone. They never let go of their belief that Messiah was going to free them from the Romans. Just think of how much of the impact of Jesus’ teaching they missed because they had a fixation for getting rid of Rome. It was probably one of the motivations behind Judas’ betrayal. Perhaps he wanted to shock Jesus into action — but it didn’t work.

Their constant squabbling was always about who would be ‘Prime Minister’ in Jesus’ cabinet. His teaching about greatness in the kingdom of God fell on deaf ears. They could not understand it because it always collided with their preconceived idea about the kingdom of God.

Even the cataclysmic events of the past few weeks had not dislodged their expectation. Now Jesus was about to leave them and He had still not said or done anything about the Romans! All the instruction He had given them about the kingdom of God over the past forty days had been filtered through the notion that He would take action now so that they could administer the new kingdom for Him after He had gone.

They finally brought their expectation out into the open. ‘Is this the time?’ they asked, hoping against hope that He would say yes. The answer they got cut them short, once and for all. ‘Timing is the Father’s business.’  It was not their business, and neither is it ours, to question God’s timing or intentions. Like the disciples, this is often something that consumes us so much that we miss the bigger picture and the valuable lesson.

These men were about to learn a new way of life. Up to now they had Jesus with them. He set the pace and they tagged along, not knowing what was going on but content to be with Him and let Him do the stuff while they watched and listened. They did what He told them and went where He sent them. He had given them authority and power and they had tasted some of the impact of the kingdom He was presenting.

From now on He would no longer be with them in person. They had witnessed the Holy Spirit’s power in His life. Now it was their turn. His physical presence would give way to the Spirit’s internal residence and they would have to learn to recognise His voice and follow His leading from within. This would put a new responsibility on them; to learn to discern His voice, understand His leading and follow His instructions.

Jesus did not leave a “Google map” for them, with all the details of the journey and the destination. That would have been so much easier to follow. Instead He promised them another person just like Himself; same disposition, same power, same wisdom, same purpose, same destination, but one who would be in their spirits, always there, always the same, always in charge.

This time they would do the stuff and the world would watch and listen and be convinced that Jesus is, after all, who He said He is. The issue is, like the disciples, like us, do we listen and follow, or do we ignore the Holy Spirit and do life our way? There is no better way to squelch the work of God on earth than to do it our way.
