THINGS THAT DAVID SAID – 14

WORDS ABOUT THE WORD.

Since we have already dipped into Psalm 119, looking at one of the most precious verses in Scripture, verse 165, let’s examine a few more gems from the same psalm.

Psalms 119:1 NIV
[1] “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.”

If David wrote this psalm, and all the evidence points to this fact, then Psalm 119 is David’s story. He gathered together, in 176 verses, everything he could think of, in his experience, that God’s Word meant to him. It was light. It was truth. It was honey. It was direction. It was security. It was delight and happiness. It was rebuke, correction, teaching. It was hope and life. It was God’s words, everything he needed for life, packaged into the pages of a book, of whatever material those pages were made.

God’s Word is like precious metal purified in the fire, preserved through centuries of hatred and fear, and every attempt to discredit and vilify its truth, inerrency, and indestructibilty. As the hymnwriter declared…

1. All people that on Earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with fear, his praise forthtell;
Come ye before him and rejoice.

2. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
Without our aid he did us make;
We are his folk, he doth us feed,
And for his sheep he doth us take.

3. O enter then his gates with praise,
Approach with joy his courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless his name always,
For it is seemly so to do.

4. For why? The Lord our God is good;
His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.

Psalm 119 begins with a declaration of blessedness. In Hebrew, there are two words that express blessedness. “Asher”, used in this verse, expresses the state of blessedness that those whom God blesses, experience. “Baruch” is God’s side of the equation. Baruch is the blessedness God bestows on those who walk according to His law. God blesses (baruch), and we are blessed (asher).

God’s blessings are not only a gift but also a state into which He places us when we choose to follow the standards of His Word. His children live in a perpetual state of blessedness in keeping with their submission and obedience to Him.

As we travel though this psalm, we meet instructions, declarations, blessings, warnings, worship, praise, prayers, actions, expressions of confidence, repentance, desire, hope…all flowing from one central truth, the beauty, efficacy, and sufficiency of God’s Word.

Without the Bible, both Old and New Covenants, we would be completely in the dark about God, the world, ourselves, life, our beginnings, our present, and our future.

Many have tried to explain these mysteries outside of the answers God gives us in His revelation. They may come up with fanciful ideas but cannot confirm what they have written with evidence. Those who believe these human impositions have no guarantee that they will end where they desire to be.

The Bible is the only reliable source of information with evidence, because God Himself has spoken, and the Holy Spirit has inspired ordinary people to write what God has said.

2 Peter 1:20-21 NIV
[20] “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. [21] For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

How has God spoken to humans in a way that we can understand?

1. Through His prophets.

Amos 3:7 NIV
[7] “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.”

The word God spoke through His prophets is accurate, reliable, and guaranteed…some already fulfilled and some yet to be fulfilled, with thousands of years of evidence that it is true.

2. Through His Son.

Hebrews 1:1-2 NIV
[1] “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, [2] but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”

Jesus is God’s Word in person.

John 1:14 NIV
[14] “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus came to earth, became part of history, to reveal the Father, to restore people to the Father, and to take them to the Father. He backed up His message by dying and rising again. No one has been able to  disprove the evidence.

3.Through the created universe.

Psalms 19:1-4 NIV
[1] “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. [2] Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. [3] They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
[4] Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world…”

Romans 1:20 NIV
[20] “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

Psalm 119 is the pinnacle of reassurance that…

2 Peter 1:3-4 NIV
[3] “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. [4] Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”

So, dear reader, if you follow David’s testimony and adjust you life to the Word of God, despite the ills of life on this planet, you will live a truly blessed life.

PRAYING GOD’S WAY – 23

HOLY AND BLAMELESS

‭1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NLT‬
[23] “Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. [24] God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.”

What a benediction for a happy church! After commending them for their faith, hope, and love, and encouraging them to do what they were doing even more, Paul prays for them to be holy and to be preserved blameless for the entire course of their lives until Jesus returns.

A few words in this prayer need clarification.

Paul, first, calls on ‘the God of peace’. Three attitudes pervade the atmosphere of God’s presence… love, joy, and peace. This is who He is. In a sin-soaked world of chaos and confusion, God’s peace is an oasis of tranquility and serenity, a priceless gift to those who trust Him, not only His peace but His presence soaked in His peace.

‭Philippians 4:6-7, 9 NLT‬
[6] “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. [7] Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus….
[9] Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

It’s this God to whom we entrust everything about our lives that will escort us to the heavenly haven of rest in His eternal presence. It’s this God who promises to keep us safe in every storm and deliver us from every threat and danger until we leave ‘down here ‘ for ‘up there’.

What could be more secure than this, especially when Paul assures us that

“God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.”

So, what will God do while we are here?

  1. He will make you holy.

Since God demands holiness as the qualification for seeing Him, and seeing how impossible it is for us to be holy without Him, we need this assurance that, just as salvation is His work in us, so is holiness.

‭Hebrews 9:12 NLT‬
[12] “With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.”

‭Hebrews 10:14 NLT‬
[14] “For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.”

What is holiness? Holiness is God’s attitude to sin. God is holy. He is utterly separate from sin. He cannot sin; He hates sin; He calls for the judgment and death of the sinner but.. He also dealt with sin by punishing His own Son in our place.

For us, holiness has two parts…
Simply put, we are to be separate from sin and separated to God.

Part one – belonging

The essence of this separation is belonging. Holiness does not mean we must be morally as perfect as God is. In this life, we are still plagued by our old sin nature. Holiness means that we must live according to the one to whom we belong. He bought us. We belong to Him. He wants us to show that belongingness by the way we live… not perfectly but purposefully, remembering that we have an Advocate who represents us when we mess up.

‭1 John 2:1-2 NLT‬
[1] “My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. [2] He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.”

‭1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT‬
[19] “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, [20] for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”

God bought us from the slave-market and dominion of sin,

‭1 Peter 1:18-19 NLT‬
[18]” For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. [19] It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”

We belong to Him, body, soul, and spirit. We are called to live out that belongingness by being separate from everything that contradicts who He is.

Part two – living

‭1 Peter 1:14-16 NLT‬
[14]” So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. [15] But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. [16] For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”

So, living by the standards of the one to whom we belong is an important part of being holy.

How is this possible?

  1. He will preserve you blameless.

We have another Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who lives in us. He provides the power, by God’s grace, to obey God’s Word when we trust and obey Him.

‭Romans 8:11-14 NLT‬
[11] “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. [12] Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. [13] For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. [14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”

The Holy Spirit in us guarantees that we belong to God and that He will finish what He started.

‭Ephesians 1:14 NLT‬
[14]” The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.”

Since we belong to God and since He is working in us by His Spirit to separate us from sin and to Himself, will God answer Paul’s prayer?

A resounding” YES!” because God is faithful and He will make it happen!

A PERFECT HIGH PRIEST

A PERFECT HIGH PRIEST

Such a high priest truly meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sin, and then for the sins of the people. He was sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered Himself. For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever (Heb. 7: 26-28).

What confidence we can have in our high priest!

Unlike the Levitical priests who went before Him, He does not have to offer another sacrifice, not for Himself or anyone else – “It is finished!” No one will ever succeed Him as high priest – He lives forever. No one is more qualified than He – He is the Son of God, no less. He is a perfect high priest in every way – holy, blameless, pure set apart from sinners and exalted above the heavens.

How can a Levitical high priest ever come anywhere near Him in fitness for their office?

When we consider Jesus, who He was, how He lived, what He did, what He said, how He treated people, how He loved and obeyed the Father, how He stood for and upheld the truth, how He suffered and died without resistance, how He rose from the dead, it is difficult to understand why His own people did not recognise who He was. Both then and now, how can they ignore the evidence? How can they reject Him, and refuse to acknowledge that He is both Son of God and their Messiah?

There can be only one reason – prejudice. They have been deceived. Prejudice and blind unbelief caused the religious leaders to reject Him and to crucify Him. They refused to examine the evidence. Today we have a world of people who would rather believe the lies that are being propagated about Him as a substitute for the truth and the unsubstantiated claims that are made about Jesus and His word, than search for the truth for themselves.

Take the claim from the Muslim world, for example that the Bible has been corrupted. On what grounds can such as statement be made and where is the evidence? It does not become true because someone said it. What about those who deny that Jesus is God? When the religious leaders rejected Jesus’ claim, He pointed them to the evidence.

For this reason they tried all the more to kill Him; not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God (John 5: 18).

This was His defence:

If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who testifies in my favour, and I know that His testimony about me is true. You have sent to John and He testified to the truth . . . I have testimony weightier that that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish – the very works that I am doing – testify that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has Himself testified concerning me . . . You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me (John 5:31-33; 36-37a; 39).

On what grounds, then, can we have absolute confidence in the high priest God has appointed on oath to stand before Him for us? Our confidence lies in the evidence and witness of who He is. Whatever people may say about Him, based on their refusal to believe the truth, Jesus is, in every way, a perfect high priest, both the Son of God and representative of the Father and the Son of Man and representative of humanity.

Unlike the Levitical priests who all died and were replaced, Jesus died and rose again, and lives forever in an indestructible body as both sacrifice and firstfuits of the resurrection. We have every reason to trust Him. His blood speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. He ever lives to make intercession for us.

LOVE IS THE KEY

LOVE IS THE KEY

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant church without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself (Eph. 5: 25-28).

Paul concluded his instructions to the church with a call to mutual submission. He also prefaced his picture of family harmony with the same call – to mutual submission. The Bible does not teach wives to submit to their husbands without the husbands’ reciprocal responsibility towards their wives.

However, nowhere does the Bible insist that wives serve their husbands. Now isn’t that strange? Why do many husbands, even within the church, equate submission with service – in fact, slavery? The moment he walks in the door, she is his servant, waiting on him hand and foot. While he is out at work, she still acts like his slave, picking up his clothes, tidying his cupboard, putting away the litter he has left around the house, preparing his favourite meals and generally ensuring his well-being in every part of his life. His home is his castle and in it he reigns supreme.

If believers are followers of Jesus, our role is to imitate Him, not the caricature of Jesus which many sections of the church present as the substitute for the real Jesus. Church leaders even lord it over their people, insisting on fancy titles and expecting to be treated like the pet lamb instead of being the shepherd.

Jesus insisted that He came, not to be served but to serve. The Old Testament prophecies present Him as the Ebed Yahweh – the Servant of the Lord. First of all, He submitted to and obeyed the Father. He served the Father by doing His will. It was the Father’s will that He serve His children in His earthly life and die in their place to pay their debt of sin. He directed every moment of His life to please the Father.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Jesus is the model of servant leadership for the husband. God intended marriage to be a visual aid of the oneness within the Trinity. The key to this unity is humility, and humility can only be fostered in the atmosphere of mutual submission – each person taking his or her place within the marriage, focussing on the well-being of the other without stubborn resistance, pride or rebellion towards one another.

It is pride and selfishness that ruin unity. It takes humility for a husband to serve his wife with sacrificial love and it takes the same humble submission for a wife to permit her husband to serve her without resistance or protest. God intended marriage to be, first of all, the union of two separate individuals producing, not uniformity but harmony in their relationship and fellowship with one another.

Children learn from their parents. They follow example before instruction. They will imitate what they see rather than what they are told. When they witness a continual power struggle between their parents, with each one attempting to control the other, with continual resistance and arguments, they will copy that kind of behaviour among themselves in the home and in their relationships outside the home.

Once again, divine wisdom paves the way for stable family life. Of course, human beings think they know better than God. They place the focus on what works (or doesn’t work) for them. Instead of following God’s pattern of protecting love, preserving unity and promoting contentment within the home by humility and mutual submission, they focus on what they believe to be the key to a happy marriage, their spouse. It is the other spouse’s responsibility to meet their need and make them happy.

The result? Discontented spouses, affairs and adultery, broken homes and rampaging divorce statistics. Men and women go from marriage to marriage to marriage in a desperate attempt to find happiness, only to have the same disappointment repeated over and over again. Their conclusion? Marriage does not work so let’s “shack up” instead so that we can go our separate ways if it doesn’t work out without having to go through the bother of a divorce.

Bending God’s rules or making our own is a recipe for disaster. God always gives His instructions and sets His boundaries to protect us from self-destruction. Within His prescriptions for living, we will find freedom and safety.

God’s pattern for a “successful” marriage is simple but not easy. Mutual submission and sacrificial service require “dying” to one’s own desires, needs and demands. We have both Jesus’ example to follow and the Holy Spirit within us to guide and empower us to do God’s will. In the doing, we will discover that, after all, God knows best. We will find peace and the harmony in the home which we desire and which is the outcome of doing life God’s way.
