JOHN’S GOSPEL… WAS THIS THE END? – 32

The inevitable happened! He was tried in a travesty of injustice, sentenced for blasphemy and treason, found guilty for being who He said He was, both Son of God and King of the Jews, and killed for the sin of the whole world, not His own.

1 John 2:2 NIV
[2] “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

And the world looked on, jeered, and celebrated.

Luke 23:35-37 NIV
[35] “The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” [36] The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar [37] and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

One man cared…

John 19:38-42 NIV
[38] “Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. [39] He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. [40] Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. [41] At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. [42] Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.”

John’s words sound so final. The body of Jesus…His remains! Only one man had the courage to do something about it. He asked permission to give Jesus’ remains a decent burial. If Joseph of Arimthea had not intervened, Jesus’ remains would have been thrown on the city garbage dump to be burned along with the bodies of the criminals who were crucified with Him.

Joseph had been a secret believer. He was afraid of the repercussions of his faith if the members of the Sanhedrin got to know about it. Was he finally ready to reveal his connection with Jesus, now that his Messiah was safely dead and out of the way? How would Jesus’ death affect Joseph’s faith?

Nicodemus also came out of hiding to join him in this final act of love towards their Messiah.

Two men, despite the hatred and contempt their fellow Sanhedrin members had shown towards Jesus, by their act of compassion, finally made a public declaration of their faith and would be remembered for their loving gesture and generosity towards Jesus. They spared no cost to give Him a dignified burial…Joseph’s new tomb, the linen cloth, the expensive herbs and spices to mask the smell of decay… nothing was too good for Jesus’ remains.

Even Joseph’s tomb, prepared for his own burial, was freely given to Jesus. Joseph was wealthy enough to have another tomb prepared for himself and his family. One wonders, after Jesus’ resurrection, if Joseph’s family ever used that tomb again or would it be dedicated as a religious shrine to be visited by millions in the centuries to come?

How much did Jesus’ prediction that He would rise again affect the actions of these two men? Did they know about His prophecy or did the disciples’ unbelief silence them from speaking about something they didn’t understand? Is seems that the actions of Joseph and Nicodemus indicated that Jesus’ remains would be prepared and left to decay like any other body after death.

… But something was different! Jesus had spoken a word, and His Word would never be unfruitful.

Isaiah 55:10-11 NIV
[10] “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, [11] so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Jesus had made a promise, and His promises were guaranteed…

2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
[20] “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”

Jesus had said He would rise again after three days, and Jesus never lied…

Matthew 16:21 NIV
[21] “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

John 10:17-18 NIV
[17] “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. [18] No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Since He had spoken the word, and His Word was His bond, Jesus, would rise again…not at the end of time but after three days. His prediction was as specific as that.

Whatever the two men had done for Jesus, as permanent as His death might have been in their thoughts, Jesus walked from the tomb three days later, through the impenetrable and immovable stone, smelling like the fragrant spices of His burial. Even greater than that, He returned with the fresh breath of heaven on Him, finally bringing the hope of heaven coming to earth as the foretaste of all that His death and resurrection had promised.

So, Paul could declare with unshakable confidence…

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 NIV
[55] “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” [56] The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. [57] But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

THEY OVERCAME BY THE BLOOD

Our theme for this week is an opportunity to clarify some misunderstandings that might have crept into our belief system by unthinkingly copying what other people say or teach.

It is a good idea rather to follow the example of the Bereans in Acts 17:11 who were more open-minded than the Thessalonians and who searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

Sadly, there are many true believers who erroneously think that the blood of Jesus is a sort of “magic” protection against all kinds of ills and reverses in life. I have even listened to prayers that make my blood “curdle” like “soaking our families in the blood of Jesus” or “covering our houses or cars with the blood of Jesus”!

No, my brothers and sisters, Jesus did not shed His blood to save our home, cars, property or even our families from the calamities that are a part of life in a fallen world. God promised that He would be with us and that He is able, in all things to work for our good. Trials of all kinds are God’s gracious way of teaching us to trust Him.

Jesus shed His blood as an atoning sacrifice for our sins so that we no longer owe God an unpayable debt. His blood forgives, cleanses and reconciles us to the Father.

What do you make of our verse for this month, then: They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…?(Rev.12:11)

Paul adequately clarifies this Scripture for us in Col. 2:14-15 (NLT), He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross.

Jesus’ death exposed the devil as a fraudster, liar and deceiver and His resurrection proved that He, not Satan, is Lord.

When Satan accuses you of sin and holds up your past to disqualify you from God’s love, the blood of Jesus is your undeniable proof that Satan is lying. You have been forgiven; you have been reconciled to the Father – Jesus’ blood is the evidence; you have received mercy – Jesus’ blood speaks a better word than the blood of Abel; you have been brought near by the blood of Jesus.

That’s how you overcome Satan – by the truth of what the death of Jesus achieved…and God’s peace in your heart is the testimony that you are no longer a slave but a son.

Real And Unchanging Love

REAL AND UNCHANGING LOVE

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love. This is how God showed His love among us. He sent His one and only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. This is love; not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4: 7-10).

This is one of the most profound passages of Scripture in the whole Bible. Strange that it should come from the pen of one who was once nicknamed, together with his brother James, “Boanerges”, sons of thunder. These two brothers were real hotheads.

Jesus had to rebuke them for wanting the fry the Samaritans in a certain village in Samaria for refusing hospitality to Jesus. It’s quite understandable that the Samaritans didn’t want this Jew in their village. After all, it was the Jews who despised the Samaritans, not the other way around. Why would they accept Him into their homes and then have Him ridicule them to their faces? Of course, they did not know Jesus.

This same hothead wrote these words, Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. What brought about the transformation? Just being with Jesus and being loved by Him! Three years in the Master’s company did wonders for the disposition of these two brothers. But it was even more than that. John himself was loved – deeply loved by Jesus. Jesus loved him not only for who he was but also in spite of who he was. Did you get that? That’s the miracle of God’s love. It’s so different from human love.

We love those to whom we are drawn because of their looks, their personalities, their way of treating us etc. Our love is mostly reciprocal. Have you ever watched a new father gazing into the face of his new-born baby? There is nothing but wonder and love in his eyes. He holds in his arms a helpless little person who is utterly dependent on him, and he rises to the occasion. He resolves in his heart to protect, provide and care for the little one for the rest of its life.

But gradually things change. The helpless baby becomes a stubborn, self-willed toddler who throws temper tantrums, refuses to obey and causes the father great frustration and embarrassment, especially when the child kicks and screams in rage on the shop floor when he cannot get his way. The same father who adored his baby son now beats him mercilessly or shouts at him endlessly when the child begins to show the same characteristics that are in him.

By the time his son reaches teenage, father and son have lost connection with one another. Love has given way to indifference or ever rejection. Why? Because the child did not come up to the father’s expectations, or even worse, the son was so like his father that the father couldn’t bear to have him near. Where is the love for his child now?

But the love of God is not like that. God loves because He cannot help it. Love is the very essence of who He is. God loves us, not because of but in spite of who and what we are. We are His offspring, made in His image, alive by His breath in us. He loves us because of Himself, not because of us. Nothing we do or do not do changes or affects His love. He cannot love us any more or any less than He loves us now.

Is it any wonder that the devil works so hard to keep us from believing in the love of God? Who would run from a love like that if we really grasped the enormity and the reality of a love that embraces the worst of us and transforms us from hotheads to lovers of God?

How can we be sure of this love? Love is an action, not an emotion word. Love reveals its nature by what it does. God’s love reached its highest point in the gift of His Son to a world that hated and rejected Him. How great that love gives, but what about a love that gives the very best you have, to have it thrown back in your face? That’s what His people did to the Father. He knew it would happen but He gave anyway.

It was not only the Father who gave. The Son also gave – His life for the sins of the world. No one will ever know what He endured for the sake of love. His love was written in blood on the soil of His beloved land, spilled at the feet of those who hated and crucified Him. How reciprocal was that!  No, God’s love is pure giving love.

It is this love that melts our hardened hearts and calls for a response of love. We love, because He first loved us. It was this love that melted John’s heart and transformed a hothead into the apostle of love. It was this love that changed Paul from a murderer to a passionate lover of Jesus who was unafraid to pour out his own life blood for his Master.

If you gaze at this love long enough, you too will be transformed.

Keep The Record Clean

KEEP THE RECORD CLEAN

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2: 1-2)

John – from “Boanerges”, a son of thunder to “the beloved disciple” – a changed man if ever there was one! What transformed him so completely? Was it the discovery of a love so great that he could never be the same again? It was a love that paid his debt and set him free to live and love in the power of the Holy Spirit.

John’s first chapter, artificially subdivided, but nevertheless significant, is all about fellowship. What must we do to protect our fellowship with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ? “Don’t fool yourself if you have sinned,” said John. “Own up and come clean with God. You can’t fool Him, and you will be estranged from Him until you admit your guilt and receive His pardon and His cleansing.”

Sin is no longer an issue to God but it is still an issue to us because it affects our fellowship with the Him. “So,” John said, “you don’t have to sin any more.” God has taken care of our sin, once for all, through the death of His Son. He has not only removed it from us, but He has also broken its power over us. He has unmasked the devil who deceived us into believing that we owed allegiance to him, masquerading as Lord, and holding us captive by our bias towards sin.

However, we are still left with the responsibility of making choices, and that makes us vulnerable to the remnants of our sin nature. We can still be tripped up in unguarded moments, and we can still give in to the temptations of the flesh in weak moments. But that does not mean that we have to start all over again. God’s provision is complete. We have a legal expert, Jesus, the Righteous One, who continues to plead our case with the Father.

He has a watertight case for mercy – His own blood that He gave as an atoning sacrifice. What does that mean? Our sin did not only corrupt and pollute us so that we could no longer have access to our Father, but it also offended God. God is perfectly holy; just and righteous in all His ways. Our sin was a stench in His nostrils. It made Him very angry because it was an affront to everything He did for us.

Imagine a human father building a beautiful home for his family in a quiet and peaceful neighbourhood, tastefully furnishing it with comfortable furniture, and stocking it with every delectable food item for their pleasure and enjoyment. It has a games-room with comfortable couches, a huge flat screen TV, every imaginable kind of book to read and game to play, a bar with fruit juices of every flavour in a refrigerator and tasty snacks of every, and every facility you can think of in the house.

When it is complete, he invites his family to view the house and to move in. All they have to do is to bring in their clothing and live under his authority and guidance, and in harmony with one another in their beautiful home, sharing the blessing of everything he has provided.

What do his children do? They thumb their noses at him, refuse to move into the home which he had built for them at great cost, and choose to live in the garden shed which is full of clutter, rats and cockroaches because they do not want to live under his authority or keep his rules. But, even worse than that, they got into the house and trashed it from one end to the other, smashing the furniture and throwing the food and drink onto the floor.

Would that father not be justifiably angry with his children? He has done everything for them out of the love of his heart, but they reject his love because they did not want to be restricted by his authority. He turned his back on them and let them go their own way, and face the consequences of their choices, but he grieved for them because he still loved them and wanted them to return to him.

God was justifiably angry with the human race because we did that to Him. We sniffed at His love; we refused to live under His roof and we trashed the beautiful earth He created for us.  Worst of all, by making our own rules, we destroyed the bodies He created to be His home. He did not only want to live with us; He wanted to live in us, but we fouled up our hearts with so much sin that we became a stench in His nostrils.

So what did He do? He sent His own Son, made exactly like we were before we chose to rebel against our Father. He lived a pure life in a fouled up world with stinking people messed up by sin. They took Him and threw Him out, killing Him by nailing Him to cross because His life showed them up for who they were, and they hated Him for it.

But this was God’s plan because His perfect Son was to take our place. He poured out His wrath against our sin on His Son until His anger was fully satisfied. Now He was free to woo His estranged children back to Himself and clean them up when they responded to His love.

God’s remedy for sin was for all sin, for all people, for all time. Did you get that? Don’t let anyone ever tell you that Jesus only died for the elect. John stated very clearly that He atoned for the sins of the whole world. Everyone has been forgiven but it is only effective for those who have received His forgiveness by faith and come back to the Father to live in His house, under His authority and in obedience to Him.

So everyone is invited to return. And we don’t have to sin any more. Let’s keep the record clean so that we can enjoy fellowship with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
