A SONG OF ASSURANCE
What would we do without Psalm 37? How often we return to David’s words in troubled times when the wicked seem invincible and the righteous vulnerable!
If there was a ever a word from the Lord, through the mind and heart of a believer, it’s this one. From our perspective, the wicked are everywhere, controlling, prospering, and laughing all the way to the bank while God’s people can hardly come up for air.
David’s personal experience was similar. Despite his anointing as future king of Israel, he was a fugitive, on the run from a ruthless killer, Saul, who was determined to end his life. David had the companionship of a motley bunch of discontents, hardly an effective bodyguard against Saul’s military might. Wherever he went, Saul and his men were in hot pursuit, breathing down his neck and barking like a pack of bloodthirsty rottweiler behind him.
Then came the Word, the real word that put his thoughts back into perspective. Who was really in charge, anyway? Was it Saul with his evil intentions, or was it God, a wise, powerful and just ruler?
If Saul represented the wicked, and David the righteous, whose cause would triumph? In the end, the outcome represented, not which side was more powerful but which side stood on God’s side and, in turn, which side did God support?
We look around us and see a similar situation at work. The wicked seem to be in charge while the righteous are swamped by the evil around us. The more we pray, the more we protest, the more our rulers double down on their wicked schemes. There seems to be no end in sight to this contest between good and evil…and the most vulnerable are at the mercy of the depots.
“Take heart”, said David, faith rising above fear.
Psalms 37:1-2 NIV
[1] “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; [2] for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.”
David leaned hard on his people’s history. Was he thinking of the Egyptian army, hot on the heels of a crowd of runaway slaves? They were coming fast and the Israelites had no defense except…God!
Then, right in the middle of the Red Sea, when God’s people thought that all was lost, the waters crashed down on the Egyptians and, guess what…now you see them, now you don’t. They vanished under the waves, just like that!
Psalms 37:10 NIV
[10] “A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.”
The Israelites were free, free to go on their merry way because the enemy had ceased to exist. Israelites one, Egyptians nil. God had won the first round for them.
However, there still lay many battles ahead, for instance, like the battle for food and water.
Their victory song soon turned to whining, complaining, and even threats of murder against their leaders. Food! They needed food. Who could provide food for such a vast crowd in such a terrible place, a howling wilderness where there was nothing but wind and sand?
God could…and did…and they sang again.
What seemed impossible turned into abundance beyond their wildest imagination for more than forty years!
Psalms 37:19, 25 NIV
[19] “In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty…
[25] I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.”
And what of the land God promised to give them. The Promised Land was crawling with giants, so they heard. How could these “grasshoppers” extirminate the giants and take over their land?
“No problem,” said the Lord.
Psalms 37:29, 34 NIV
[29] “The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever…
[34] Hope in the Lord and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.”
From the human perspective, they needed military might to deal with the enemy and military might they did not have. For the Israelites, it was a lost cause before they even started…but not for God. He approached the situation from a different perspective. The battle was not about power. It was about righteousness, obedience to His covenant.
When they obeyed, city walls fell down, the sun stood still in the sky, and the enemy turned on each other! Under their new leader, Joshua, the Israelites sowed mayhem wherever they went until the land they thought impossible to conquer, became theirs.
Psalms 37:10-11, 27 NIV
[10] “A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. [11] But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity….
[27] Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.”
David concluded this timeless wisdom with these words…
Psalms 37:39-40 NIV
[39] “The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. [40] The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.”
Surely, God’s wisdom never changes. Do we need deliverance from the wicked, supply for every need, and a secure country in which to live? Then as David concluded, let’s follow the instruction that will assure us of God’s favour, by living within the boundaries of His righteousness given to us through the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And, just to crown it all, David reminds us…
Psalms 5:12 NIV
[12] “Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.”
