RUTH…THE STORY OF REDEMPTION – 3

Back in Israel, Ruth’s story begins to unfold…

Giving Ruth careful instructions, Naomi drew Ruth into the plan.

“One day, Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As time went on, Ruth carved out a space in Boaz’ work team, gleaning daily behind the workers until the harvest was gathered in. At the end of the harvest, the supply of grain for Naomi and Ruth had run out. Naomi realised that it was time to put her plan into action.

This was the time for God’s plan for young widows must be activated, caller the Levitate law.

“The Levirate Law in the Bible (Deuteronomy 25:5-10) required a man to marry his deceased brother’s childless widow to “raise up seed” for his brother, ensuring the dead man’s name and inheritance continued in Israel. The first son born from this union was considered the heir of the dead brother, taking his name and property, thus preventing the family line and land from being lost. This obligation applied when brothers lived together, with a specific ceremony (Halitzah) if the brother-in-law refused, as seen in the stories of Tamar (Genesis 38) and Ruth (Ruth 4).” (Source: Google)

The language Naomi used reveals the custom to initiate this process. Ruth was to dress in her best, lie at Boaz’ feet when he lay down to sleep after his meal, and uncover his feet. This would be the sign to him of her request…that he fulfil his obligation to her as her “kinsman-redeemer”.

“I will do whatever you say,” Ruth answered. So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The outcome was exactly as Naomi had predicted. Boaz was startled to find Ruth lying at his feet.

“In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned—and there was a woman lying at his feet! “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family.””

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Boss immediately understood her request…

“Spread the corner of your garment over me,”…

…as a request to marry her. This expression, “Spread the corner of your garment over me,” is often used in Scripture for marriage…

“Spread the corner of your garment over me” is a biblical phrase from the Book of Ruth (Ruth 3:9) where Ruth asks Boaz to act as her kinsman-redeemer, essentially a request for marriage, protection, and provision, symbolizing taking her under his wing, much like a bird shelters its young. It means to claim, cover, provide for, and marry someone, fulfilling the duty of a redeemer in that culture, acting as a formal marriage proposal and a plea for security and family.” (Source: Google)

God used the expression to describe His own “marriage” to Israel…

“ ‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.”

‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭16‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Malachi described something out of keeping for a married man…

“The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.”

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2‬:‭16‬ ‭NIV

The idea is that a husband cannot cut the bond with his wife, the one he has coveted with his garment, by divorcing her That would be violence.

“For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2‬:‭16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This expression, “the corner of your garment” deserves greater understanding from its use in Scripture.

RUTH…THE STORY OF REDEMPTION – 2

On their return from Moab, the two women had to eke out an existence without husbands to work their land. A law in Israel’s constitution, God’s covenant with His people, made provision for people in their situation.

“ ‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.”

‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭19‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Naomi taught Ruth this law and sent her out to gleam for grain during the harvest. Ruth decided to do as Naomi had taught her since they had no harvest of their own.

“And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.” Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.””

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The story now begins to move from circumstance to a divine plan. Was the Lord orchestrating something before the Elimelek family went Moab? Even the weather and its consequences are under His control.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭55‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

So, where did Ruth glean?

“Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing from the clan of Elimelek, whose name was Boaz…

So she (Ruth) went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬, ‭3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

When Boaz learned of the gleaning and that Ruth, his relative’s daughter-in-law, he ordered his servants to be extra kind to her…

“So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.” …As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭9‬, ‭15‬-‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

So, Ruth took home much more grain than a normal day’s gleaning would yield. When Naomi learned that Ruth had gleaned in Boaz’ fields, she pricked up her ears, connected the dots, and wisely fell in with God’s plan.

““The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.””

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2‬:‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.” So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

RUTH…THE STORY OF REDEMPTION – 1

Tucked away in the folds of Israel’s early history is a love story simply entitled “Ruth”. It’s a beautiful cameo but packed with hidden meaning and, like much of the Old Testament narrative, filled with imagery about Jesus.

The story begins with a famine in Israel. After the conquest under Joshua’s leadership, the land was apportioned among the Israelites, according to tribes, clans and families. Each family received a portion of land that remained an inheritance for that family.

However, for a little family in Judah, disaster struck. The famine destroyed their livelihood. They had no option but to relocate to a foreign country for a season leaving their inheritance to lie fallow until they returned.

“In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. The man’s name was Elimelek, his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ NIV

Elimelek took his family to Moab to wait out the famine. During that time, Elimelek died and later, his sons married Moabite women and and also eventually died in Moab, leaving three widows to eke out an existence as best they could.

For ten years they struggled together. Finally, they got a break.

“When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭1‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The three widows left for Israel but, on the way, Naomi tried to persuade her daughters-in-law to return to their homeland. She had no more sons for them to marry and to produce offspring to inherit the land. Orpah finally decided to go back but Ruth stubbornly refused to return home. In a fiery response, she declared…

“Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”

‭‭Ruth‬ ‭1‬:‭14‬-‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

It seems that the two women had formed a bond so strong in their widowhood and suffering that Ruth’s future lay, not in Moab but with Naomi in a new homeland. She made a commitment to Naomi, to Naomi’s people, and to Naomi’s God that would not only change her life forever but would also bring her bloodline into the bloodline of David and, eventually, the human lineage of the Messiah.

HELL – GOD’S FINAL GIFT OF LOVE

This sounds like a very contradictory and confusing statement. How can hell be a gift of love? Let’s unpack this statement.

Jesus and Paul explain the way unbelievers think and act.

Jesus said that unbelievers love darkness because of their sin.

“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.”

‭‭John‬ ‭3‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Paul explains that the wicked behaviour of unbelievers expresses a deep-seated disrespect for God.

“As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” …“There is no fear of God before their eyes.””

‭‭Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭12‬, ‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

These verdicts add up to one thing…people hate and run from God because of their sin. Eventually, sin…and the judgment of God on sinners…is traced back to unbelief. People hate God… they are terrified of Him because they know that their sin will be punished…

“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

‭‭John‬ ‭3‬:‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Some people even lean hard on the lie that there is no God because, if they can make God go away, they need not worry about punishment. They can sin as much as they like because death ends it all and there is no accountability.

Now, let’s examine a few descriptions of hell in the Bible. We know that hell is a place of darkness. This means that God’s presence cannot be in hell because there is no darkness in God.

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus told stories of people who rejected God’s way and were thrown out, away from God’s presence, into darkness, for example, the man who was not wearing a ”wedding garment”.

“Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Hell is also a place of torment. Imagine having enjoyed sin so much in this life that you have become enslaved to your lusts. You just cannot get enough of your evil desires. Now, take away the opportunity to satisfy your lusts but the lusts are still in you, tormenting you, forever unfulfilled.

Imagine then, how uncomfortable people who love darkness and sin, would feel in God’s eternal presence where His light would reveal everything about them and what they had done. Without faith in God’s forgiveness and the blood of Jesus to wash them clean, their filthy hearts would be known to everyone.

Therefore, in God’s kindness, He will send them to the place of darkness, away from His presence forever, where they would be in the environment they loved and forever in the company of people like themselves.

The Bible also tells us that God has given us the freedom to choose. He honours that right, even if people make wrong choices with terrible consequences. He will never force anyone to do what they don’t want to do.

Without the new life in Jesus, people’s choices are limited to only that which is in their nature to do. This means that they cannot be truly righteous because even their good choices are tainted with selfishness.

God gives people what they want even if they land up in hell as a consequence.

In Romans 1, Paul explained how this works.

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness …For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another…Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬, ‭21‬-‭24‬, ‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

People are not born homosexuals. They become homosexuals by choice, and God confirms their choices by letting them become what they want. Note that their actions lead to a mindset that enslaves them. They are inflamed with lust.

The end result is even more terrible, beginning with a choice and ending with a mind that has lost the ability to know the difference between good and evil.

“Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭28‬-‭32‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Their minds become so corrupted that they approve of everything evil and condemn everything good.

Now, how can anyone with a depraved mind be comfortable and at home in the presence of God? Imagine living forever in a place that is completely opposite to the way you think and behave, a place where there is no sin, evil, or wickedness in anyone and where your wickedness is glaringly visible to everyone.

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” …But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21‬:‭3‬-‭4‬, ‭8‬-9 NIV

Can you now understand that, though hell is a terrible place, it is a kindness to separate unbelievers from God’s children and to consign them to a place they themselves have chosen while they lived in this earth.

Paul makes it clear the no one can hide behind the excuse that he/she did not know that God exists and that He holds all people accountable for their choices. This is true for three reasons… creation, conscience, and the Holy Spirit.

First,

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬-‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Second,

“(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭2‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Third,

The Holy Spirit convicts people of sin.

“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin …”

‭‭John‬ ‭16‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Not only has God signed His name on every detail of creation, which people can acknowledge if they are honest and can choose to see, but He has also written His law on their conscience from conception. There is not a soul on earth that does not know the difference between right and wrong from birth. Even a very young child knows when he/she has done wrong. Then, on top of that, the Holy Spirit actives the conscience about sin until, if the sinner continues to ignore His voice the conscience becomes inactive, no longer functioning as a warning system.

“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.”

‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God has a specific plan for those who trust in Him.

“Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name. “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

So, it is because of God’s loving kindness that He separates believers from unbelievers, preventing His pure and perfect kingdom from being polluted by sinners and sending unbelievers to a place where they will remain in the environment of their choice forever.

We, who know and love God, can be grateful to Him that He will separate His own people from a corrupt society into a place of purity and perfection in His presence when Jesus returns to set up His eternal kingdom on earth. Those who refuse to come under His rule now will enjoy the fruits of their choices then.

  1. Eternal Light! Eternal Light!

How pure the soul must be,

when, placed within Thy searching sight,

it shrinks not, but with calm delight

can live and look on Thee.

  1. The spirits that surround Thy throne

may bear the burning bliss;

but that is surely theirs alone,

since they have never, never known

a fallen world like this.

  1. O how shall I, whose native bow’s

is dark, whose mind is dim,

before the Ineffable appear

and on my human spirit bear

the uncreated beam?

  1. There is a way for man to rise

to that sublime abode:

an offering and a sacrifice,

a Holy Spirit’s energies,

an Advocate with God.

  1. These, these prepares us for the sight

of holiness above:

the sons of ignorance and night

May dwell in the eternal Light,

through the eternal Love.

HELP ME TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS – 3

The story that follows Jesus’ transfiguration, the disciples’ failure to dislodge a demon, poses the question, “What is authority”?

“After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.””

‭‭Mark‬ ‭9‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus had just had an altercation with His disciples. While He and His three closest companions were up the mountain, the other nine were tussling with a stubborn and rather nasty demon. On His return, He soundly rebuked the nine disciples for their unbelief.

In a quieter moment, they asked Jesus why they had failed to budge the demon. His reply was mystifying unless we begin to dig deeper.

In our modern context, I think the “deliverance ministry” is badly misunderstood. It is, therefore, misapplied, by “taking authority” over demons and ordering them to go, even if they are not demons but manifestations of “the flesh”, such as anger, rage, jealousy, etc.

Jesus did not tell us to take authority over anything simply by speaking it. Demons take no notice of such foolishness. Having authority comes from something far deeper.

Jesus claimed to have authority but how and where did He derive it? He said, “By prayer!”

Now let’s check out a story that clearly teaches us the source of authority and by association, the meaning of faith.

“When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭8‬:‭5‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This story is loaded with information about authority and faith. Did you notice how Jesus connected the centurion’s source of authority with his faith? Let’s unpack it.

“For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

The centurion’s authority was derived from his submission to higher authority. This kind of authority demands humility. His role was never to act presumptuously or independently of his superior authority. His role was simply to relay instructions, trusting that his word would be obeyed because of the authority under which he spoke. If his underlings trusted the source of his authority, they would obey him.

The centurion recognised Jesus’ authority under God by the results of His words. So, he declared his faith by saying, “Just say the word…”

What a simple explanation of the meaning and purpose of prayer! Prayer is first, settling the issue of authority. Who is in charge? When I, in prayer, surrender myself to the absolute authority of Jesus, when I listen to Him instead of babbling about myself, I recognise and authenticate my partnership with Him.

An incident in King David’s life perfectly illustrates this principle. David was determined to build a temple for God. He expressed his desire to the prophet Nathan who encouraged him to carry out his plan. That night, God spoke to Nathan. David was a man of war. God did not assign to him the task of building the temple. His son, Solomon, would have that honour.

Instead, God made David a promise…He would build a house for him, a dynasty that would never end. Unlike the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel, who were wicked and whose dynasties were repeatedly cut off,  David’s descendants would reign in one continuous dynasty that would culminate in the eternal reign of Messiah…the son of David.

David was overwhelmed by this promise. He went into his sanctuary to commune with God,  first expressing his unworthiness for such a great destiny and then worshiping the Lord.

“ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ” Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? ….“And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.”

‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭7‬:‭11‬, ‭16‬-‭18‬, ‭25‬-‭26‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In his words, “Do as you have promised”, David relayed to earth what God had spoken in heaven.

The Apostle Paul also reiterated the same thought…

“It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Now let’s connect all the dots, the process of prayer as Jesus lived it and taught His disciples…

  1. Listen to Him. Jesus takes centre stage in everything.
  2. Through prayer, we establish and affirm our submission to Jesus as Lord, our Supreme Authority.
  3. When He gives an appropriate promise or instruction regarding an issue in earth, we are to relay heaven’s will to earth by speaking His word by faith.
  4. By His authority through us, His will is carried out on earth as it is done in heaven.
  5. God’s word guarantees that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Finally, the guarantee…

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭55‬:‭10‬-‭11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God will always do what He says!
