When God joined heaven and earth in the creation of the first man, He intended this link to be the permanent and only way in which humans are to live on this earth. The union of the divine and human in a bond of fellowship and partnership by faith is to govern every aspect of our lives.
Jesus made it simple.
John 15:5 NLT
[5] “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”
Sin, which began with Adam’s rebellion against God, broke this union, separating man from God, and sending man on the path to self-destruction through his declared independence.
However, humans have not taken kindly to God’s intervention. Humans, in the main, hate relinquishing their independence, regardless of its consequences.
Romans 10:16 NLT
[16] “But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “Lord, who has believed our message?”
God’s daring plan to restore the union worked. Jesus, the God-man, came, Iived the life of a perfect son, died the death of a rebel, and rose again to vindicate His claim to be the Son of God. He stood in for us as a sinner, took God’s wrath against sin on our behalf, and promises forgiveness and reinstatement as God’s sons if we return the reins of our lives to Him.
This restoration of fellowship with God – the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, – through trust and obedience, is also an eternal partnership between heaven and earth. No human can arbitrarily choose to believe in Jesus, and God cannot force anyone to believe.
So, how does it happen? It’s a mystery to us because we don’t understand God’s ways, but we must trust His wisdom, so much greater than ours. It’s a process that begins in eternity.
Romans 11:33 NLT
[33] “Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!”
GOD’S PART
It begins with God.
Ephesians 1:4 NLT
[4] “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”
Every detail of His plan for the universe and our place in it was predetermined. God left nothing to chance.
God’s choices are not arbitrary, as we think. He chooses people for salvation to suit His purpose.
Romans 8:29 NLT
[29] “For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
God’s design is to create a human family of sons and daughters exactly like Jesus, in nature and in function. They will reign over His creation in His kingdom, each person in an appointed place in partnership with Jesus.
Daniel 7:27 NLT
[27]” Then the sovereignty, power, and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will last forever, and all rulers will serve and obey him.”
God gave those whom He chose to be in His family, to Jesus, guaranteeing by this ‘election’ that everyone chosen will be saved.
John 6:37-39 NLT
[37] “However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. [38] For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. [39] And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day.”
How do we come to Jesus?
John 6:44 NLT
[44] “For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.”
Since God is sovereign over His creation, no human can override His purposes. He will do what He has planned to do, and nothing or no one can stop Him or thwart His plans. He draws the ones He has chosen to Jesus, and they will come to Him.
As much as God initiates His plan and our response to Him, He gives us freedom to choose to receive or reject Him. Yet, in a mysterious way we cannot fathom, those whom He has chosen will come to Jesus.
OUR PART
Faith in Jesus begins with the message about Jesus, faithfully preached by those whom God has sent to preach.
Romans 10:14-15 NLT
[14] “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? [15] And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
The message about Jesus initiates faith in the heart.
Romans 10:17 NLT
[17] “So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.“
God brings heaven and earth together in a powerful response to faith in the message of Jesus…
1 Peter 1:23 NLT
[23] “For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.”
God raises the dead spirit to new life, reconnecting the Spirit of God to the spirit of man in an act so powerful that Jesus called it being “born again”.
John 3:5-7 NLT
[5] “Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. [6] Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. [7] So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ “
Ephesians 2:1, 4-6 NLT
[1] “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins….
[4] But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, [5] that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) [6] For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.”
Without God’s supernatural act of spiritual resurrection, no amount of going to church or acting like a believer will change the heart. Change requires God’s power and God’s intervention.
Ezekiel 36:26-27 NLT
[26]”And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. [27] And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.”
Faith in God’s Word triggers the moment when heaven and earth come together to create a new species, a son or daughter of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
[17]” This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
This moment of salvation on our part, begins with the confession by mouth of His supreme authority, confirming faith in the heart that God raised Him from the dead.
Romans 10:9-10 NLT
[9] “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.“
Salvation is both an event and a process. The new birth into God’s kingdom begins a new life of submission and obedience to Jesus as Lord…your supreme authority in ever decision, choice, and action. Gone the rebellion and independence that reduces your true humanity to less that you were created to be, a son in the family of God.
Through God’s choice and power, and our response of faith, we have closed the door to independence. Instead, we have begun a journey in fellowship with Jesus that grows stronger and more fruitful as we learn to live in and out of our union with Him.
TOGETHER
Once heaven and earth are joined together, this partnership continues throughout our lives and into eternity.
Romans 8:14 NLT
[14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
We are now reconnected to heaven and indwelt by God’s Spirit whom the Father assigned to be His presence in us. The Holy Spirit is the administrator of everything God has provided for us through Jesus, the Guide who leads us into all truth, and the one who enables us to submit to and obey the Father.
One thing hold this fragile union together. Faith is the link between heaven and earth.
Hebrews 11:6 NLT
[6] “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.“
2 Corinthians 5:7 NLT
[7]” For we live by believing and not by seeing.”
We read, hear, and trust in the truth of God’s word, and obey His instructions. Then our union with God grows stronger as we continue on the path of trust and obedience, following Jesus who promised to take us to the Father.
