SONS AND DAUGHTERS

But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are His sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but God’s child; and since you are a child, God has also made you His heir (Gal. 4:4-7).

Now we are sons and daughters of God, and no longer slaves and orphans. We have the distinguishing marks of sonship – we have a name, a home, and an inheritance. God is our Father; we have been accepted as brothers and sisters of Jesus, and we share in all the privileges and benefits of being God’s children (Eph. 1:3-14).

  1. We have been given the Father’s name

Until Jesus came, the name of the Father was not known. In Jesus, we see the nature of God fully revealed – God with us and God with a face.

I have revealed Your name to those You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours; You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word (John 17:6 – Berean Study Bible).

Jesus revealed the Father’s name to His disciples so that, by His Spirit they (and we) could call on and use His name.

  1. We have a home.

A slave and an orphan have no home of their own. They live on borrowed property and can be removed at any time. They do not belong to a family. They have no roots and no security.

Not so God’s children.

Not only do we dwell in Jesus now, but we also have the assurance of a place in the Father’s house in eternity. David stated with great confidence:

I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever (Psa. 23:6).

On the eve of His death, Jesus promised His disciples:

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms’ if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be with me where I am (John 14:1-3).

Amazing as it may sound, not only do we dwell in the Father, but He also dwells in us. So intimate is our union with Him through the Holy Spirit that He has made His home in us.

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith (Eph. 3:16-17a).   

  1. We have an inheritance.

We are not only God’s children but joint heirs with His Son. What does that mean? What does Jesus inherit?

In these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe (Heb. 1:2).

God appointed Jesus to be heir of everything He created, i.e., the entire universe and everything in it, and He appointed us to be joint heirs with Jesus. How awesome is that! But there is something else we are to inherit. Let me explain.

Firstly, we must understand that we receive an inheritance from someone who has died. It is not we who must die. We do not have to die before we receive our inheritance from the Father. It is ours now and available for us to use now.

To find out what our inheritance is, we must go on a Bible “treasure hunt”. The first clue, as we have already discovered, is in Rom. 8:17 and Gal 4:7 – the Father has appointed us to be His heirs and co-heirs with Christ.

The second clue is found in Heb. 6:12 –

We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

Aha! We are getting closer. Our inheritance is contained within God’s promises. But how do we gain access to His promises?

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And through Him, the  ”Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God (2 Cor.1:20).

We make God’s promises our own by endorsing what He has said and standing in faith on His Word. We ask Him to make good on what He has promised.

Now we are getting close to the treasure. What has God promised that we can claim as our own because we are His appointed heirs?

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires (2 Pet. 1: 3-4).

God made His promises available to us so that we can participate in the divine nature. As we take hold of His promises in every situation, we become more and more like Him, filled with His love, joy and peace. What a life in the midst of our world’s chaos.

Sons and daughters? That is what we are!

THE LEGEND OF ISHTAR AND THE PAGAN CELEBRATION OF EASTER

Christians around the world celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus during a season called “Easter”. But why do we call it “Easter” when Jesus fulfilled the Jewish feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits, which the Jews celebrated for eight days between Nisan 14 and 21? Jesus Himself instituted the “Lord’s Supper” during the Feast of Passover when He gave His disciples the symbols of unleavened bread and wine as a reminder of His death.

 

How do we and, incidentally, the world around us, celebrate this season?

 

We hold a sunrise service; some hold a feast which includes eating ham; we give our children Easter eggs, either coloured or chocolate eggs, and we tell them stories about the Easter bunny who brings the eggs.

Firstly, how do we reconcile the dates of Good Friday and Easter Sunday with Jesus’ words?

A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth (Matt. 12: 39-40).

Was Jesus either lying or exaggerating when He said, “Three days and three nights”? If He were crucified on Friday, buried before sunset on Friday afternoon, and resurrected on Sunday before sunrise, even by Jewish reckoning He could not have been in the grave for three days and three nights.

Scripture teaches there were TWO Sabbaths between the time when Jesus entered the tomb and the moment his resurrection took place! This is the KEY to understanding the correct sequence of events of what happened to Jesus our Savior! . .

Every Passover lamb was chosen from the flock on the 10th day of Nisan, scrutinized for three days for blemishes and sacrificed on Nisan 14. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Sunday, Nisan 10, was on public display for three days and was sacrificed on Wednesday, Nisan 14 (Ex. 12: 3-8).

“After Tuesday sunset in 30 A.D. (when the Biblical day ended) Jesus partook of his last meal with his twelve disciples (Luke 22:14-15, etc.). Jesus’ crucifixion occurs between noon (9 am – Mk. 15:25) and 3 pm Wednesday. He dies at 3 pm. According to the Bible, work was allowed in order to prepare for the NEXT day, a high Holy Sabbath where no work was permitted (Lev. 23:5-7), called the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This Holy time began at Wednesday sunset. Jesus was very quickly taken from the cross after his death as there were only a few short hours before God’s annual Feast day began. . .

 

“The Bible states that after the annual Sabbath, known as the Feast of Unleavened Bread, had ended (on sunset Thursday), three women went to buy spices for Jesus’ body (Mark 16:1). After buying spices, the women spent the rest of Friday preparing them. When the weekly Sabbath started at sunset Friday, the women rested (Luke 23:56). After resting, two of the women, Mary Magdalene, and another Mary, go to observe Jesus’ tomb late on the weekly Sabbath . . .

 

“The resurrection of Jesus from the dead took place at sunset Saturday, April 8, 30 A.D., which is seventy-two hours after he died and placed in the heart of the earth (i.e. tomb). This fulfilled the sign of Jonah the prophet he gave in Matthew 12:38-40 and PROVED He was the TRUE Messiah to the Jews! The Bible simply does not teach Jesus was either crucified on a Friday or resurrected on a Sunday morning. Our Savior was dead and buried in the earth a full three days and three nights, proving for all ages that he was and is the Messiah.

Why is do we celebrate “Easter”? From where do the strange customs come which have nothing to do with Jesus or His death and resurrection?

 

In the first three centuries CE, the early church celebrated the death of Jesus as the fulfillment of Passover. Constantine, however, declared Christianity the state religion and opened the door to pagans by disconnecting Jesus and His message from its Jewish roots. He “Christianized” pagan worship through the celebration of pagan festivals; by changing the names of pagan idols to the names of “saints” and by incorporating pagan symbols into the festivals of the church.

 

From the 4th century, Christians were not the only ones who celebrated Easter. The self-proclaimed moon-goddess, Semiramis, both mother, and wife of Nimrod, Noah’s great grandson (Gen. 10: 8-10), was known by the name Ishtar (Easter). After the death of her illegitimate son, Tammuz, who was killed by a boar while out hunting, Semiramis deified him. She called him the only begotten son of the sun-god, Baal, and herself, Ishtar, the moon-goddess.

 

Semiramis was the wife of Cush, Noah’s grandson. They had a son, Nimrod, meaning “rebel”. After his father’s death, Nimrod married his mother, Semiramis and became a powerful ruler, building cities and initiating the building of the tower of Babel to defy Yahweh who had destroyed the earth with a flood.

 

Nimrod became a god-man to the people and Semiramis, his mother, and wife became the powerful Queen of ancient Babylon. She gave herself the title, “Queen of Heaven”.

Nimrod’s brother, Set, was jealous of Nimrod’s power (Nimrod was also called Osiris in Egypt) and he killed him by luring him into a gold box which he fastened down and threw into the River Nile. Isis (another name for Semiramis/Ishtar), searched for his body and found it in the river. Set stole the body, cut it into fourteen pieces, so the legend goes, and sent the pieces all over Nimrod’s kingdom. The only piece she could not find was his reproductive organ. She claimed that Nimrod could not come back to life without it, so he ascended to the sun and became the sun-god, Baal.

Semiramis also claimed that Baal would be present in the earth in the form of a flame when used in worship with lamps and candles. After Tammuz’ death, she told the people that Tammuz was now ascended to his father, Baal and that the two of them would be with the worshippers in the sacred candle or lamp flame as Father, Son, and Spirit.

 

Semiramis claimed that she was miraculously conceived and that she came down from heaven in a giant moon egg that fell into the Euphrates River. She became known as Ishtar and her egg was called, “Ishtar’s egg”. This was supposed to have happened at the time of the first full moon after the spring equinox (in the northern hemisphere). The date of Easter is calculated by this reckoning and does not coincide with the Jewish Passover.

After Nimrod’s death, Semiramis bore an illegitimate child whom she claimed was conceived by Baal through his rays. Her son was called Tammuz.  Tammuz was fond of rabbits and they became sacred because people believed him to be the son of the sun-god Baal/Nimrod. Rabbits and eggs are symbols of fertility in this ancient false religion, but they were incorporated into the symbols of the Christian festival of Easter.

Tammuz was killed by a wild boar while he was out hunting. Semiramus said that some of his blood fell on the stump of an evergreen tree which grew into a new tree overnight. The evergreen tree was made sacred by the blood of Tammuz. The fir tree is a central feature of our Christmas celebrations.

She also proclaimed a forty-day time of sorrow before the anniversary of Tammuz’ death. During these forty days, the worshippers were to eat no meat. They were to meditate on the sacred mysteries of Baal and Tammuz and to make the sign of a T over their hearts as they worshiped.

These forty days of so-called “Lent” have nothing to do with Jesus’ fast in the wilderness. They are a time of mourning for Tammuz. In Ezekiel’s vision of the temple in Jerusalem. God showed him what the women were doing.

Then He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz. He said to me, ‘Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.’ (Ezek. 8: 14).

On the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox every year, they were to hold a celebration feast, to eat ham because Tammuz was killed by a boar and sacred cakes with a T or cross on the top. On that Sunday, they were to celebrate “Ishtar’s day” with rabbits and eggs.

Can my readers now see how much pagan myth and legend is associated with the symbols and practices of the Easter celebration? We are actually worshipping Baal, the sun-god, Semiramis, the Queen of Heaven, and Tammuz whose resurrection to his father, Baal, was commemorated on Ishtar Sunday, as an unholy trinity when we do these things. This false religion has spread around the world and has taken many forms, but we find its roots in the lies that wicked Semiramis fabricated and passed on, in her so-called “Babylonian Mystery religions”, to the rebellious people of her day. In the Bible, “Babylon” became the symbol of these blasphemous practices.

What did God have to say about these practices in the first century of the early church, which some of His people had already incorporated into the worship of Jesus? Through the writing of the Apostle John in the Book of Revelation, God expressed His abhorrence for any association with what these people were doing. Yet, today, Christian leaders not only vehemently defend the traditions and practices of Christmas and Easter, but they also actively promote them as “an opportunity to preach the gospel.” What happened to the other 360 days of the year?

John saw the overthrow and judgment of Babylon in his vision.

After this, I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. With a mighty voice he shouted:

‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’ She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean detestable animal. For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.’

Then I heard another voice from heaven say: ‘Come out from her, my people,’ so that you will not share her sins so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God remembered her crimes (Rev. 18: 1-5).

Oh people of God, why do you defend and persist in doing what God hates? Why risk the judgment that will be poured out on “Babylon” because you stubbornly protect the right to celebrate Easter with all its vile traditions?

Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you,’ and ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’ Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God (2 Cor. 6: 17-18; 7: 1).

What Is Hatred?

WHAT IS HATRED?

Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. And He has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must love their brother and sister (1 John 4: 20-21).

What comes to mind when you read the word “hate”? Do you think of actions like insulting, swearing, ignoring or deliberately harming the person you hate? Hatred may include treating someone cruelly, for example, but the Bible’s version of hatred is more explicit than that.

Jesus connected anger with murder.

You have heard that it was said to people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment (Matt. 5: 21-22a).

Hatred, like anger, begins in the heart. When one is angry with someone, for whatever reason, one has an underlying attitude of contempt. It is impossible for one person to make another angry. “You make me angry!” is not true. A person chooses to respond in anger when another provokes him.  If he dwells on the offence long enough, he will begin to hate the offender.

However, hatred is more than an attitude towards another person. One does not have to hold malice in the heart to hate. Hatred is as much indifference to another’s need as ill-will is towards that person.

Jesus told a parable in Matt. 25, which illustrates this point. At the end of the age, when He gathers the nations for judgment, He will measure righteousness by an unexpected standard. How did the individual treat his brother? God recognises that people express their love for Him by the way they treat one another. If someone sees a brother in need and does nothing about it, He interprets their neglect as hatred.

“But isn’t that a bit harsh?” you may ask. In what way can we show our love for God? We cannot do anything for God to express our love for Him except love His people. How can we love His people? We can do whatever we can to make their lives comfortable. Jesus said that we ought to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, visit the sick and the prisoner and relieve suffering wherever possible. He does not expect us to save the world. However, there are simple things we can do meet people’s need where we are.

Assisting people in need does not mean that we must only give them money or goods. There are many ways to show God’s love to those who cross our path every day. A kind word or a word of encouragement goes a long way to lift the spirits of a disheartened individual. We can offer practical help in many different ways by giving our time and attention sometimes just to listen. A listening ear often does wonders for a downcast soul.

What does Jesus ask of us, His children? He wants us to be aware of the people around us. We are often so self-absorbed that we are oblivious to the pain others suffer. We have much to give if we turn our attention away from ourselves. Becoming aware of others and intervening where we can is the right thing to do.

However, Jesus did not instruct us to become busybodies. We need to respect the dignity and privacy of others. We must step in and help only when people value our assistance, not when we become interfering or controlling.

We can just as easily steal from another when we withhold help from him as when we take what does not belong to us. We need to be aware that we express our love for Jesus by our obedience to His commands. He summed up every detail of His desire for our lives in the two greatest commandments:

On one occasion and expert in the law stood up to test Jesus, ’Teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘What is written in the Law?’ He replied. ‘How do you read it?’

He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ ‘You have answered correctly,’ Jesus replied. ’Do this and you will live,’ (Luke 10: 25-28).

WHO MAY DWELL IN YOUR HOLY HILL?

With the passing of time we have come to realise that we are living in a world of constant change. Godly principles and values that were once embraced and practised by people to be the only way of life are almost non-existent. The statistics of crime, which include murder, rape and a host of other evil things, continue to show an increase. Churches that once were filled with people seeking God, are now empty, with sport stadiums being filled instead. We are warned of all of this in 2nd Timothy 3:1-4. However, the choice is ours who we will serve.

What I like about reading God’s word is, that the more we delve into it, the more we are see the way Christians should live awaiting their soon coming King. When reading through Psalm 15 especially through verse 1, I seem to think that David, who wrote this psalm, was busy communicating with God when certain thoughts flashed through his mind. It could only be God who made David ask the question about eternity. Verse 1 “Lord who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?” The only thing I could think of was the place where God dwells, heaven, God’s kingdom. Where there is a kingdom, there are citizens who dwell in that kingdom. The sobering thought is what requirements are expected of us to inherit the Kingdom of God. Well the answer is simple. Verse 2 of Psalm 15 has the answer. “He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous.” As Christians we need to be transparent so that the world can see Jesus in our lives.

When Judy and I were on honeymoon down in Cape Town, busy sightseeing, we were approached by a little Malay boy selling fruit. At the same time two “Duck tail” hooligans went towards the little Malay boy. One of the Duck tails grabbed a lovely big peach without paying for it and was about to eat it when I challenged this individual to either pay for what he had taken or give it back to the seller. By that time I was ready for a fight. Nevertheless the hooligan got the message and replaced the peach. As Christians we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that allowing Christ to be in control of our lives, and not submitting to evil desires, we have a permanent place to dwell in called Heaven with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I end by encouraging you to read Jude 1 verses 24&25.

What Is The Spirit Of Jesus?

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF JESUS?

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you recognise the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus has come in the flesh is from God but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world (1 John 4: 1-3).

John was aware, in the first century after Jesus, that there were already false teachings growing up around Him. It does not take long for unscrupulous people to twist the truth to suit their own ideas and very often their pockets. Those who have no inclination to follow Jesus and abide by His requirements for being His disciples, need to accommodate sin in all its subtle forms. Rather than match their lives with His, they change Him into someone who is less demanding so that they can water down His standards and carry on with their sin.

Unfortunately for them, what they teach does not change the truth of who He is, but it does disqualify them from having any part in the life He promised those who believe in Him. Even more tragic is that they drag others down with them in their unbelief.

How do we know that we are on the right track in the midst of the outpouring of false teaching all over the world? John gave us one test, but there are many others which will help us stay on course. How do we recognise the Spirit of God? By the testimony of Jesus.

Now I know that John wrote that people who cannot confess the name of Jesus or who deny that He was truly human are manifesting the spirit of antichrist. However, there are far more subtle forms of denial within the church which gullible believers swallow without giving it another thought.

We are aware of the cults which teach that Jesus was not true God or true man. But what about the preachers and teachers who add their own prescriptions to the simple invitation of Jesus, “Follow me”?

These imposters are not always easy to recognise because they masquerade as the ministers of Christ but they are even more dangerous than those who openly deny the truth of the word. Paul warned that anyone who adds to the finished work of Christ is under God’s curse (Gal. 1: 6-9). That’s pretty serious, isn’t it? Anathema – he said; cursed by God.

There are both blatant and subtle additions to the gospel of Christ in all streams of the church. What about the rituals and paraphernalia that have been added, for example? The elevation of certain people above others. When did Jesus ever tell His disciples that only certain “ordained” priests are permitted to administer the Lord’s Supper or baptise believers? It’s an imposition.

Jesus expressly declared that true leadership steps down to lift others up while false leaders lord it over the laity. Whether people operate officially in the church as priests or whether they claim titles for themselves like Prophet So-and-so” or “Apostle So-and-so” that make them think they are superior to others, makes no difference. It is an imposition and not of the spirit of Jesus.

When did Jesus set up an elaborate religious system with candles, incense, a priestly hierarchy and special garments, and bowing to an altar? Imposition! How does any of this fit into “Follow me,” and, “Go and make disciples”? What about teachings like “born-again”, “Spirit-filled” and “tongues-speaking” Christians versus the rest? Did Jesus ever teach these things? Did he ever put people into categories and treat them accordingly? No, He did exactly the opposite. He affirmed those who were despised and marginalised by society – lepers, “sinners”, women, children, prostitutes, tax-collectors etc.

What about those “spiritual leaders” who milk their congregations through guilt to enrich themselves by pretending to have compassion on the poor? Among the genuine ones who create opportunities for us to channel our money into ministries all over the world which help needy people, are the imposters who teach the “prosperity gospel” from which they benefit handsomely.

And superstition abounds in the so-called “preaching” of the Word. The fear of punishment is a big one. Have you heard this one – that people’s prayers for healing, for example, are not answered because they do not have enough faith, or that their business failed or their marriage fell apart because they sinned? What about “It is finished”? Jesus paid sin’s debt once-for-all, didn’t He?
